Background: The efficacy and safety of mucolytics in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and chronic bronchitis or exacerbations of COPD have been reported. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of mucolytics in patients with stable COPD.
Methods: Reports from randomized controlled trials to evaluate the efficacy and safety of mucolytics, including ambroxol, bromhexine, carbocisteine, erdosteine, fudosteine, l-methylcysteine, and N-acetylcysteine used in patients with stable COPD were searched for in PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and the Igaku Cyuo Zasshi database.

Alterations in airway epithelial homeostasis increase viral respiratory infections risk. Viral infections frequently are associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations, events that dramatically promote disease progression. Mechanism promoting the main respiratory viruses entry and virus-evocated innate and adaptive immune responses have now been elucidated, and an oxidative stress central role in these pathogenic processes has been recognized.

Introduction: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is one of the most common causes of acute lower respiratory infection in infants and young children. Mucolytic agents, such as acetylcysteine and carbocysteine have reported benefits in alleviating acute upper or lower respiratory infections. Among these, N-acetylcysteine (NAC) has cyto-protective effects when cells are infected with the RSV.
