There are many different kinds of pathogenic bacteria species with very different susceptibility profiles to different antibacterial drugs. One limitation of QSAR models is that they consider the biological activity of drugs against only one species of bacteria. In a previous paper, we developed a unified Markov model to describe the biological activity of different drugs tested in the literature against some antimicrobial species. Consequently, predicting the probability with which a drug is active against different species of bacteria with a single unified model is a goal of major importance. The work described here develops the unified Markov model to describe the biological activity of more than 70 drugs from the literature tested against 96 species of bacteria. We applied linear discriminant analysis (LDA) to classify drugs as active or inactive against the different tested bacterial species. The model correctly classified 199 out of 237 active compounds (83.9%) and 168 out of 200 inactive compounds (84%). Overall training predictability was 84% (367 out of 437 cases). Validation of the model was carried out using an external predicting series, with the model classifying 202 out of 243 (i.e., 83.13%) of the compounds. In order to show how the model functions in practice, a virtual screening was carried out and the model recognized as active 84.5% (480 out of 568) antibacterial compounds not used in the training or predicting series. The current study is an attempt to calculate within a unified framework the probabilities of antibacterial action of drugs against many different species.

Heterogeneity is ubiquitous in biological and synthetic active matter systems that are inherently out of equilibrium. Typically, such active mixtures involve not only conservative interactions between the constituents but also nonreciprocal couplings, whose full consequences for the collective behavior still remain elusive. Here, we study a minimal active nonreciprocal mixture with both symmetric isotropic and nonreciprocal polar interactions.

The activity of a dentist reveals itself in numerous aspects, and its regulation is determined by the Deontological Code of the Dental Association, which contains a set of rules that dentists are obliged to follow in the exercise of their profession. The regulation of this activity goes beyond following these precepts because, in the legal relationship that is established whenever an agreement is made with a patient to carry out the treatment deemed appropriate, a series of duties and obligations begin for each party, translated into a reciprocal contract, in which the non-compliance of one of them may result in a legal claim. The objective of this study was to research most court decisions delivered in this century, in Portugal, regarding the activity of dentists when faced with patient claims and to outline a framework that better allows us to understand the regulation of this activity within the scope of the contracts established with them.

The death and clearance of nurse cells is a consequential milestone in Drosophila melanogaster oogenesis. In preparation for oviposition, the germline-derived nurse cells bequeath to the developing oocyte all their cytoplasmic contents and undergo programmed cell death. The death of the nurse cells is controlled non-autonomously and is precipitated by epithelial follicle cells of somatic origin acquiring a squamous morphology and acidifying the nurse cells externally.

Background And Objectives: Levels of activated complement proteins in the CSF are increased in people with multiple sclerosis (MS) and are associated with clinical disease severity. In this study, we determined whether complement activation profiles track with quantitative MRI metrics and liquid biomarkers indicative of disease activity and progression.
Methods: Complement components and activation products (Factor H and I, C1q, C3, C4, C5, Ba, Bb, C3a, C4a, C5a, and sC5b-9) and liquid biomarkers (neurofilament light chain, glial fibrillary acidic protein [GFAP], CXCL-13, CXCL-9, and IL-12b) were quantified in the CSF of 112 patients with clinically isolated syndromes and 127 patients with MS; longitudinal MRIs according to a standardized protocol of the Swiss MS cohort were assessed.

Snakebite envenomation is a public health issue that can lead to mortality and physical consequences. It is estimated that 5.4 million venomous snake bites occur annually, with 130,000 deaths and 400,000 amputations.
