Objective: Our purpose is to report a case of renal hydatidosis and its treatment.

Methods: The characteristics of the case are presented and discussed.

Results And Conclusions: The hydotic disease is a parasitic infestation caused by the larvae from echinococcosis granulosus. The kidney ranks third among all visceral localitations, compromising only 2% to 4% of all cases. Most of patients are asymptomatic for years and the correct preoperative diagnosis is difficult.

Article Synopsis
  • Hydatid disease, caused by the Echinococcus granulosus parasite, primarily affects the liver and lungs, with renal cases being quite rare and often asymptomatic until advanced stages.
  • A 32-year-old woman with left flank pain was diagnosed with a significant renal hydatid cyst, leading to successful surgical treatment and no recurrence after follow-up.
  • Early diagnosis using imaging techniques like ultrasound and CECT is crucial, as surgical intervention is the most effective treatment, helping to preserve kidney function when possible.

Article Synopsis
  • Parasitic infections in the U.S. primarily affect immigrants and travelers, often leading to delayed diagnoses by physicians unfamiliar with these diseases.
  • Nearly 2,000 cases of imported malaria occur annually, with severe symptoms that can mimic bacterial sepsis, and treatment requires careful management to improve survival.
  • Strongyloidiasis, endemic in warm regions, can stay dormant for years and worsen if corticosteroids are used, while other infections like cystic echinococcosis and paragonimus present with specific respiratory symptoms and are found in various global regions, including parts of North America.

Article Synopsis
  • Renal artery stenosis can lead to conditions like renovascular hypertension and ischemic nephropathy, impacting kidney function.
  • A case study highlights the use of FDG PET/CT and delayed abdominal FDG PET/MRI imaging to assess a kidney affected by severe renal artery stenosis due to retroperitoneal alveolar echinococcosis.
  • The imaging showed increased activity in the renal parenchyma but no activity in the renal collecting system, suggesting that renal artery stenosis should be considered when evaluating diffuse renal parenchymal FDG uptake.

Article Synopsis
  • Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection caused by a tapeworm from the Taeniidae family, mainly affecting the lungs and liver, with rare cases in the kidneys.
  • Most individuals with hydatid disease experience vague symptoms or may not show any signs for years, making imaging techniques essential for diagnosis.
  • The report discusses a unique case of an isolated hydatid cyst found in the right kidney.

In humans, solitary renal involvement or primary renal echinococcosis is rare, accounting for about 2-4 % of cases. Usually, patients shpw no obvious symptoms, but they can manifest as renal pain, renal mass, gross hematuria, and hydatiduria in rare cases. We report a case of primary renal cystic echinococcosis, which was originally misdiagnosed as a tuberculous renal abscess.
