Study Design: Investigate the association between growth of the spine and thorax under conditions that create symmetric or asymmetric growth disturbances of the spine or thorax in a growing rabbit.
Objective: Prove growth of the spine and growth of the thorax are directly related.
Summary Of Background Data: Understanding the association between growth of the thorax and growth of the spine may explain the occurrence of thoracic insufficiency in patients with congenital scoliosis.
Methods: Symmetric or asymmetric growth disturbances of the spine or thorax were established in 5-week-old rabbits. During growth of the rabbits, structural changes in the spine, thorax, and lung volume were assessed using serial CT scans. Measures of pulmonary function, spine, and thoracic deformity were related to one another across groups.
Results: The mean Cobb angle and distortion of the thoracic cage were significantly greater for the unilateral tethered rib group. There were no significant differences in total lung volume among the experimental groups. However, the left/right lung volume ratio was significantly different for the unilateral tethered rib group compared with the control group.
Conclusions: Unilateral deformity of the spine or thorax induces both a scoliosis and thoracic cage deformity with asymmetric lung volumes.

At present, primary hyperparathyroidism is most often discovered in an asymptomatic patient, but can sometimes be revealed by a renal or bone complications. In all cases, a full work-up is recommended, with assessment of renal function (glomerular filtration rate), 24-hour calciuria, screening for risk factors for lithiasis, and renal and urinary tract imaging (ultrasound or CT scan) to look for stones or nephrocalcinosis. Bone densitometry, with measurements of the spine, femur and radius, is the recommended reference test for demineralization.

The ribs, sternum, and costal margin provide a rigid, but flexible chest wall that functions to provide protection to the vital cardiothoracic organs, while also allowing for varying levels of respiration based on physiologic need. The latter function is accomplished through various muscular attachments and rib articulations with both the axial spine posteriorly and the sternum anteriorly. The accessory muscles of inspiration rely on the downward slope and outward curve of each rib, which when contracted move the ribs upward and outward, in turn forcing the sternum anterior and increasing the thoracic volume.

The aim of this study was to compare the technique of navigation-assisted biopsy based on fused PET and MRI datasets to CT-guided biopsies in terms of the duration of the procedure, radiation dose, complication rate, and accuracy of the biopsy, particularly in anatomically complex regions.
