A new fluorescent cytosine analog "C" containing a -stilbene moiety was synthesized and incorporated into hemiprotonated base pairs that comprise -motif structures. Unlike previously reported fluorescent base analogs, C mimics the acid-base properties of cytosine (p ≈ 4.3) while exhibiting bright (ε × Φ ≈ 1000 cm M) and red-shifted fluorescence (λ = 440 → 490 nm) upon its protonation in the water-excluded interface of C:C base pairs.

Molecular encapsulation and bioactivity of gnetol, a resveratrol analogue, for use in foods.

J Sci Food Agric

August 2022

Departamento de Bioquímica y Biología Molecular-A, Facultad de Biología, Universidad de Murcia - Regional Campus of International Excellence "Campus Mare Nostrum", Murcia, Spain.

Background: Gnetol is a stilbene whose characterization and bioactivity have been poorly studied. It shares some bioactivities with its analogue resveratrol, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic, cardioprotective and anti-cancer activities. However, the low solubility of stilbenes may limit their potential applications in functional foods.

The present work reports on the preparation of polythiol-functionalized silica particles by thermally and photo-initiated radical addition reactions using poly(3-mercaptopropyl)methylsiloxane (PMPMS) as sulfhydryl group-rich surface modification reagent. Prior to surface modification with PMPMS, the silica was vinylized with vinyl trimethoxysilane. Finally, the usefulness of the thiolated silica particles was demonstrated by their further modification for various HPLC applications such as argentation chromatography and chiral separations.

Two different heterogeneous catalysts, one with Cu(ii) covalently bonded to functionalized mesoporous silica (FMS-Cu(II)) and another with CuO nanoparticles immobilized over the same silica (FMS-CuO-np), have been synthesized by a common route but with a minor alteration in the sequence of addition of reagents. It is interesting to find that by merely changing the order of the addition of reagents Cu(ii) can be incorporated into the framework in two different forms. In one case Cu(ii) binds to the N and O donor centers present in the functionalized material whereas in the other case CuO nanoparticles are generated in situ.
