Using two-dimensional agarose gel electrophoresis, we show that mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) replication of birds and mammals frequently entails ribonucleotide incorporation throughout the lagging strand (RITOLS). Based on a combination of two-dimensional agarose gel electrophoretic analysis and mapping of 5' ends of DNA, initiation of RITOLS replication occurs in the major non-coding region of vertebrate mtDNA and is effectively unidirectional. In some cases, conversion of nascent RNA strands to DNA starts at defined loci, the most prominent of which maps, in mammalian mtDNA, in the vicinity of the site known as the light-strand origin.

Malaria has been a leading cause of death in human populations for centuries and remains a major public health challenge in African countries, especially affecting children. Among the five Plasmodium species infecting humans, Plasmodium falciparum is the most lethal. Ancient DNA research has provided key insights into the origins, evolution, and virulence of pathogens that affect humans.

The widespread application of quantum dots (QDs) in recent years has raised concerns about potential environmental and human health risks. Although the toxicity of cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs) has been partially studied, their effects on stem cells, tissue regeneration, neurodevelopment, and neurobehavioral toxicity remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the combined toxic effects and mechanisms of CdTe QDs on planarians at the individual, tissue, cellular, and molecular levels.

Recent research has revealed an accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in the environment and human tissues, giving rise to concerns about their potential toxicity. The kidney is a vital organ responsible for various physiological functions. Early kidney development is crucial for ensuring proper structure and function.

Background: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) exhibits a cellular hierarchy with a subpopulation of stem-like cells known as glioblastoma stem cells (GSCs) that drive tumor growth and contribute to treatment resistance. NAD(H) emerges as a crucial factor influencing GSC maintenance through its involvement in diverse biological processes, including mitochondrial fitness and DNA damage repair. However, how GSCs leverage metabolic adaptation to obtain survival advantage remains elusive.

Purpose: Preimplantation aneuploidy in humans is one of the primary causes of implantation failure and embryo miscarriage. This study was conducted to gain insight into gene expression changes that may result from aneuploidy in blastocysts through RNA-Seq analysis.
Methods: The surplus embryos of preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) candidate couples with normal karyotype and maternal age < 38 were collected following identical ovarian stimulation protocol.
