Published: August 2006

Objective: To explore the anatomy of mesial temporal lobe and the relationships between the mesial temporal lobe and its surrounding structures.

Methods: Twenty formalin-fixed adult cadaveric heads after perfusion of the arteries and veins with colored latex were studied under microscope, and photographs were taken.

Results: The hippocampus, fimbria, amygdala and choroidal fissure constituting the mesial temporal lobe were intraventricular structures, and uncus, parahippocampal gyrus, and dentate gyrus were extraventricular structures. The apex of the uncus pointed to the oculomotor nerve and posterior communicating artery. The anterior segment faced the cistern of Sylvius, ICA and MCA. The posterior segment faced the Crus cerebri. The uncus was related medially to the posterior cerebral artery, anterior choroidal artery, and optic tract.

Conclusion: The structures of the mesial temporal lobe are complicated, so understanding of the mesial temporal lobe anatomy and the relationships between the mesial temporal lobe and its surrounding structures is conducive to the microsurgical operations of the mesial temporal lobe lesions.

The β-site amyloid precursor protein-cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1) gene polymorphism (rs638405) has been widely reported to be associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk. However, studies on the relationship between BACE1 gene polymorphism (rs638405), brain volume, and cognition in AD patients remain scarce. To investigate the effect of genetic polymorphism in BACE1 on gray matter volume (GMV) and cognition in AD, this study recruited 111 cognitively unimpaired (CU) controls and 144 AD patients.

Visual hallucinations (VH) and pareidolia, a type of minor hallucination, share common underlying mechanisms. However, the similarities and differences in their brain regions remain poorly understood in Parkinson's disease (PD). A total of 104 drug-naïve PD patients underwent structural MRI and were assessed for pareidolia using the Noise Pareidolia Test (NPT) were enrolled.

Structural inequality, the uneven distribution of resources and opportunities, influences health outcomes. However, the biological embedding of structural inequality in aging and dementia, especially among underrepresented populations, is unclear. We examined the association between structural inequality (country-level and state-level Gini indices) and brain volume and connectivity in 2,135 healthy controls, and individuals with Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal lobe degeneration from Latin America and the United States.

Alteration of responses to salient stimuli occurs in a wide range of brain disorders and may be rooted in pathophysiological brain state dynamics. Specifically, tonic and phasic modes of activity in the reticular activating system (RAS) influence, and are influenced by, salient stimuli, respectively. The RAS influences the spectral characteristics of activity in the neocortex, shifting the balance between low- and high-frequency fluctuations.

Integrating spatial and temporal information is essential for our sensory experience. While psychophysical evidence suggests spatial dependencies in duration perception, few studies have directly tested the neural link between temporal and spatial processing. Using ultra-high-field functional MRI and neuronal-based modeling, we investigated how and where the processing and the representation of a visual stimulus duration is linked to that of its spatial location.
