We investigated associations of menopausal age category with body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, waist-hip ratio, and waist-height ratio. We also explored the moderating effect of anthropometric measures on associations of menopausal age category with prespecified sex hormones: estradiol, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), sex hormone-binding globulin, bioavailable testosterone, and total testosterone-estradiol (T/E) ratio. In this cross-sectional study, we included 2,436 postmenopausal women from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis who had menopausal age, anthropometric, and sex hormone data at baseline.

Background: Implementation of semaglutide weight loss therapy has been challenging due to drug supply and cost, underscoring a need to identify those who derive the greatest absolute benefit.

Objectives: Allocation of semaglutide was modeled according to coronary artery calcium (CAC) among individuals without diabetes or established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Methods: In this analysis, 3,129 participants in the MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis) without diabetes or clinical CVD met body mass index criteria for semaglutide and underwent CAC scoring on noncontrast cardiac computed tomography.

Diabetic Nephropathy-Associated Impaired Aortic Function Is Not Mediated by Mean Arterial Pressure and Its Determinants.

J Clin Med

December 2024

Cardiovascular Pathophysiology and Genomics Research Unit, School of Physiology, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg 2193, South Africa.

The study aimed to assess the potential impacts of mean arterial pressure (MAP) and its determinants (cardiac output and systemic vascular resistance) on diabetic nephropathy (DNP)-associated impaired aortic function. This multi-ethnic study included 115 chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients (67 non-dialysis and 48 dialysis). Six aortic function measures were evaluated by SpygmoCor.

Gestational Weight Gain (GWG) modulates pregnancy outcomes and long-term offspring metabolic health. The 2009 Institute of Medicine (IOM) GWG recommendations have largely been validated in Caucasian and mono-ethnic East Asian cohorts. Asians are at higher metabolic risk at a lower body mass index (BMI), and this has prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to identify lower BMI cut-offs for risk evaluation amongst Asians.

Effects of antihypertensives with and without IL-6 lowering properties on long-term blood pressure control: The prospective HELIUS cohort.

Int J Cardiol Cardiovasc Risk Prev

March 2025

Department of Public and Occupational Health, Amsterdam Public health Research Institute, Amsterdam university Medical Center, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic inflammation, particularly the role of interleukin-6 (IL-6), is being explored as a target for improving hypertension treatment.
  • In a study involving 1,510 participants over six years, it was found that calcium channel blockers (CCBs) with IL-6-lowering properties (specifically amlodipine and barnidipine) resulted in better blood pressure control compared to other CCBs.
  • No significant differences were seen in blood pressure control among other antihypertensive classes or across different ethnic groups, indicating a need for further research into IL-6's impact on hypertension management.
