The following chaetognaths were found in the Atlantic Ocean between 34 to 40 degrees S and 52 degrees 20' to 62 degrees 00' W: Sagitta friderici, S. tasmanica, S. minima, S. gazellae, and S. enflata (in order of abundance). Of these, only S. friderici was parasitised by unencysted metacercariae of the families Derogenidae (Derogenes sp.), Hemiuridae (Ectenurus sp.) and Fellodistomidae (Monascus filiformis), and encysted metacercariae of Lepocreadiidae. The percentage of infection for each sampling station varied from 0.033 to 0.001 in August and from 0.02 to 0.001 in October 1996, with the highest values occurring at stations closer to the coast. The intensity of infection (worms per host) varied from 1 to 3 for Ectenurus sp. and was 1 for Derogenes sp., Monascus filiformis and Lepocreadiidae. Unencysted metacercariae were found in mature developmental stages of chaetognaths, whereas encysted ones occurred mainly in juveniles. The size and length of the ovaries of parasitised and unparasitised chaetognaths did not differ significantly. This is the first report of encysted Lepocreadiidae metacercariae and a progenetic metacercaria of Ectenurus sp. in Chaetognatha from the SW Atlantic Ocean.

The knowledge of metals concentration in upwelling areas are a concern due the higher productivity of these areas In Cabo Frio Upwelling-Downwelling System (CFUS) is high primary productivity area and has been identified as an Hg hotspot to biota in SE Brazil that has been susceptible to Hg inputs, due to growing industrialization in the region. To investigate the concentration of Hg and Se metals, as well as the trophic transfer of these metals, the present study investigated Hg and Se concentrations in 64 samples collected in net mesh of >20, >64, >150 and >300 μm, in 2012, in the region's water masses. Higher mean Hg concentrations were found in zooplankton, 0.

A chromosome-anchored reference assembly for the gray snapper, Lutjanus griseus.

School of Ocean Science and Engineering, The University of Southern Mississippi, Ocean Springs, MS, 39564, USA.

Background: The gray snapper (Lutjanus griseus) is a marine reef fish commonly found in coastal and shelf waters of the tropical and subtropical western Atlantic Ocean. In this work, a draft reference genome was developed to support population genomic studies of gray snapper needed to assist with conservation and fisheries management efforts.

Methods And Results: Hybrid assembly of PacBio and Illumina sequencing reads yielded a 1,003,098,032 bp reference across 2039 scaffolds with N50 and L50 values of 1,691,591 bp and 163 scaffolds, respectively.

Understanding the spatial ecology of commercially exploited species is vital for their conservation. Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus, ABT) are increasingly observed in northeast Atlantic waters, yet knowledge of these individuals' spatial ecology remains limited. We investigate the horizontal and vertical habitat use of ABT (158 to 241 cm curved fork length; CFL) tracked from waters off the United Kingdom (UK) using pop-up satellite archival tags (n = 63).

Predicting the abundance of Lepeophtheirus salmonis in the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick.

Department of Health Management and Centre for Veterinary Epidemiological Research, Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Objective: The primary objective was to construct a time series model for the abundance of the adult female (AF) sea lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis in Atlantic Salmon Salmo salar farms in the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick, Canada, for the period 2016-2021 and to illustrate its short-term predictive capabilities.

Methods: Sea lice are routinely counted for monitoring purposes, and these data are recorded in the Fish-iTrends database. A multivariable autoregressive linear mixed-effects model (second-order autoregressive structure) was generated with the outcome of the abundance of AF sea lice and included treatments, infestation pressures (a measure that represents the dose of exposure of sea louse parasitic stages to potential fish hosts) within sites (internal) and among sites (external), and other predictors.

Forecasting population responses to rapidly changing marine ecosystems requires mechanistic models integrating complex demographic processes, fitted to long time series, across large spatial scales. We used a Bayesian metapopulation model fit to colony census data and climatic covariates spanning 1900-2100 for all Northeast Atlantic colonies of an exemplar seabird, the Northern gannet (Morus bassanus) to investigate metapopulation dynamics under two climate scenarios. Fecundity varied non-linearly with near-surface air temperature and recruitment was depressed by sea surface temperature.
