We describe a 7-year-old girl who presented with loss of appetite, weakness and excercise intolerance. Enzyme investigation of the respiratory chain in muscle tissue revealed a combined complex I, III and IV deficiency. A novel heteroplasmic G-->A exchange at nucleotide position 14739 was found in the MTTE gene of the tRNA glutamic acid. The mutation load in muscle was 72%, urine sediment 38%, blood 31% and fibroblasts 29% and it correlated with COX-negative fibres. Our patient presented with a predominantly myopathic phenotype. The G14739A mutation is the third reported in the mitochondrial tRNA glutamic acid gene, and it occurred in a sporadic case.

Over the past few decades, ocean hypoxia has been increasing due to human activities. Hypoxic stress, characterized by a reduced level of dissolved oxygen, is an escalating threat to marine ecosystems, with potentially devastating effects on the viability of endangered species such as the tri-spine horseshoe crab Tachypleus tridentatus. Even though this species is remarkably resilient to low oxygen levels, persistent hypoxia can negatively impact its population's survivability.

Photorespiration is a complex metabolic process linked to primary plant metabolism and influenced by environmental factors, yet its regulation remains poorly understood. In this study, we identified the asprs3-1 mutant, which displays a photorespiratory phenotype with leaf chlorosis, stunted growth, and diminished photosynthesis under ambient CO, but normal growth under elevated CO conditions. Map-based cloning and genetic complementation identified AspRS3 as the mutant gene, encoding an aspartyl-tRNA synthetase.

RALA is an amphipathic cationic peptide demonstrated to be a low-toxicity and high-efficiency delivery platform for the systemic delivery of nucleic acid therapeutics. This work reports three RALA-derived peptides modified with N-terminal palmitic acid, engineered through amino acid substitutions and truncated sequences. All three peptides have good nucleic acid encapsulation, release and uptake, biocompatibility, and endolysosome escape.
