Although considerable attention has been focused on elucidating the factors that drive inflammation, it is becoming clear that this "acceleration" state is offset by an internal "handbrake". A recent study has uncovered an essential component of this handbrake system, revealing that lipoxins trigger suppressors of cytokine signalling to dampen inflammatory responses to infection. This work bolsters the growing interest in understanding how inflammation is controlled from within and draws further attention to novel targets for drug development based on mimicking the actions of endogenous anti-inflammatory and pro-resolution signals.

Elevated numbers of atherogenic lipoproteins (apoB) predict the incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D). We reported that this may be mediated via the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome, as low-density lipoproteins (LDL) induce interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) secretion from human white adipose tissue (WAT) and macrophages. However, mitigating nutritional approaches remained unknown.

Inflammation is a protective response to pathogens and injury. To be effective it needs to be resolved by endogenous mechanisms in order to avoid prolonged and excessive inflammation, which can become chronic. Specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) are a group of lipids derived from omega-3 fatty acids, which can induce the resolution of inflammation.

Higher estrus-associated temperatures (HEAT) are a hallmark feature in sexually active females. The overarching aim of this study was to characterize the variability, magnitude, and persistence of HEAT in heifers and suckled beef cows as well as identify associated factors when occurring during thermoneutral conditions at the onset of the spring breeding season. In both heifers and cows, estrus was induced using a 7-d controlled internal drug release (CIDR)-PGF2α protocol.

The 2022 guidelines on pulmonary hypertension from the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the European Respiratory Society (ERS) provide therapeutic strategies that account for the variability in the clinical presentation of newly diagnosed patients. We summarize treatment recommendations for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in patients without significant comorbidities, particularly for idiopathic, hereditary, drug/toxin-induced, or connective tissue disease-associated PAH. In this group of patients, multidimensional assessments for short-term mortality risk guide initial treatment decisions and treatment decisions during follow-up.

Prostaglandins are important lipid mediators with a wide range of functions in the human body. They act mainly via plasma membrane localized prostaglandin receptors, which belong to the G-protein coupled receptor class. Due to their localized formation and short lifetime, it is important to be able to measure the distribution and abundance of prostaglandins in time and/or space.
