Surgical treatment of stenosing lesions of carotid arteries has proved to be a reliable method of prevention and management of chronic cerebrovascular insufficiency. The purpose of this study was to assess the diagnostic possibilities of duplex scanning from the position of an isolated diagnostic method for safe and efficient reconstruction of carotid arteries. The study comprised 177 patients presenting with occlusive-and-stenotic lesions of carotid arteries, who underwent a total of 204 reconstructive operations. We believe that duplex scanning alone may safely be considered sufficient to make a definite diagnosis of carotid arteries stenosis in the overwhelming majority of the patients involved.
