Introduction: This study aimed to assess the effect of the mandibular second molars on the stress distribution and initial displacements during leveling the curve of Spee using different archwire thicknesses and materials by means of finite element analysis.
Methods: After construction of all anatomic structures, including the mandibular alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, and dentition, 0.022-in slot brackets and 0.

As a popular vegetable in Yunnan Province, China, taro flowers are delicious but contain substances that can cause numbing and mucous membrane damage. Prolonged high-temperature cooking is used by locals to mitigate these effects, though its mechanisms were previously unexplored. This study confirms the presence of needle-like calcium oxalate crystals in taro flowers and shows that prolonged steaming reduces their quantity, size, and sharpness, making them safer to eat.

Modern photonic devices demand low-cost, scalable methods for creating periodic patterns over diverse surfaces including nonplanar and tipped ones, the examples of which can be readily found in fiber optics. Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) offer an attractive route for fabricating such patterns in a single-step straightforward procedure, where the temporal and spatial locality of the self-interference effects ensure robustness against variations of the laser processing parameters. In this work, we show the LIPSS-assisted oxidation of thin titanium films by near-IR femtosecond laser pulses as a promising technology for the production of regular gratings consisting of rutile ridges.

Background: Spinal stabilization in dogs is challenging, and improper implant placement can result in significant morbidity. Objectives were to evaluate reliability of a ball-tipped probe for detection of breached versus non-breached pedicle drill tracts in a canine large breed cadaveric model. CT scans obtained from T6 to sacrum.

Traditionally, mathematical models in ecology placed an emphasis on asymptotic, long-term dynamics. However, a large number of recent studies highlighted the importance of transient dynamics in ecological and eco-evolutionary systems, in particular 'long transients' that can last for hundreds of generations or even longer. Many models as well as empirical studies indicated that a system can function for a long time in a certain state or regime (a 'metastable regime') but later exhibits an abrupt transition to another regime not preceded by any parameter change (or following the change that occurred long before the transition).
