Background Drug shortages have become a significant challenge globally, affecting healthcare delivery and patient outcomes. This study aimed to assess drug shortages' prevalence, causes, and impact at a tertiary care hospital in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), providing actionable insights for future mitigation strategies. Methods A retrospective descriptive study was conducted at Mediclinic Parkview (MPAR) Hospital, part of Mediclinic Middle East (MCME), UAE.

Oseltamivir is a drug that has been widely used to prevent and treat influenza A and B. In this work, an ultrasensitive, simple, and novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor combined with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP-ECL) based on a graphene-like two-dimensional material, Mxene quantum dots (MQDs) was constructed to selectively detect oseltamivir. A molecularly imprinted polymer membrane containing an oseltamivir template was constructed by electropolymerization and elution of modified MQDs on a glassy carbon electrode.

Assessing the transepithelial resistance to ion flow in the presence of an electric field enables the evaluation of the integrity of the epithelial cell layer. In this study, we introduce an organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) interfaced with a 3D living tissue, designed to monitor the electrical resistance of cellular barriers in real-time. We have developed a non-invasive, tissue-sensing platform by integrating an inkjet-printed large-area OECT with a 3D-bioprinted multilayered airway tissue.

To assess the extent of susceptibility to the four neuraminidase inhibitors (NAIs) approved in Japan of the epidemic viruses in the 2022-23 influenza season in Japan, we measured the 50 % inhibitory concentration (IC) of oseltamivir, zanamivir, peramivir, and laninamivir in influenza virus isolates from patients. Viral isolation was done with specimens obtained prior to and after treatment, and the type/subtype was determined by RT-PCR using type- and subtype-specific primers. The IC was determined by a neuraminidase inhibition assay using a fluorescent substrate.
