Intensity modulated photovoltage and photocurrent spectroscopies reveal that photoanodes based on nanorod arrays exhibit dramatically faster electron transport while retaining similar electron lifetimes (recombination times) compared to standard photoanodes assembled from colloidal nanoparticles.

Structural mechanism underlying PHO1;H1-mediated phosphate transport in Arabidopsis.

Nat Plants

January 2025

National Key Laboratory of Plant Molecular Genetics, CAS Center for Excellence in Molecular Plant Sciences, Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai, China.

Arabidopsis PHOSPHATE 1 (AtPHO1) and its closest homologue AtPHO1;H1 are phosphate transporters that load phosphate into the xylem vessel for root-to-shoot translocation. AtPHO1 and AtPHO1;H1 are prototypical members of the unique SPX-EXS family, whose structural and molecular mechanisms remain elusive. In this study, we determined the cryogenic electron microscopy structure of AtPHO1;H1 binding with inorganic phosphate (Pi) and inositol hexakisphosphate in a closed conformation.

Membrane Surface Charge, Phospholipids, and Protein Localization.

Rev Physiol Biochem Pharmacol

January 2025

Institute of Medical Sciences, University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland, UK.

Cell membranes contain multiple charged lipids that bind proteins dynamically and their spatial organization on the inner/outer membrane leaflet, or in spatially localized areas has considerable biological importance. Myristoylated alanine-rich C kinase substrate (MARCKS) proteins and their roles as electrostatic switches are one example covered. Cell surface charge needs to be monitored and regulated continually and the roles of lipid flippases and scramblases and their electrical regulation also are considered.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative condition characterized by the deposition of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides, which aggregate into toxic structures such as oligomers, fibrils, and plaques. The presence of these Aβ aggregates in the brain plays a crucial role in the pathophysiology, leading to synaptic dysfunction and cognitive impairment. Understanding how physiological factors affect Aβ aggregation is essential, and therefore, exploring their influence in vitro will likely provide insights into their role in AD pathology.

Genetically engineered immune cells hold great promise for treating immune-related diseases, but their development is hindered by technical challenges, primarily related to nucleic acid delivery. Polyethylenimine (PEI) is a cost-effective transfection agent, yet it requires significant optimization for effective T cell transfection. In this study, we comprehensively fine-tuned the characteristics of PEI/DNA nanoparticles, culture conditions, cellular physiology, and transfection protocols to enhance gene delivery into T cells.

Interactions between Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) at the Water-Air Interface.

Environ Sci Technol

January 2025

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey 08544, United States.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)─so-called "forever chemicals"─contaminate the drinking water of about 100 million people in the U.S. alone and are inefficiently removed by standard treatment techniques.
