In order to assess the environmental risks associated with the emission of fly-ash into the atmosphere and its storage on waste heaps, the trace element contents of fly-ashes from burning Polish hard coal were determined by a newly developed INAA method. Leaching of trace elements from the fly-ash by water and H2SO4 solution (pH approximately 2.5) simulating acid rain, respectively, was studied using AAS and spectrophotometric methods. Analogous experiments were done with neutron-irradiated fly-ash, following the composition of the eluate gamma-spectrometrically. The new fine fly-ash (CTA-FFA-1) candidate reference material was prepared, and the certification was undertaken on the basis of an international intercomparison run. Preliminary evaluation of results shows that at least 38 elements will be certified and, in addition, the "information values" for at least 12 elements will be given.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a monomer of plastic that can leach into water from scratched containers when used for an extended period. Arsenic (As) is an environmental toxicant, and people are exposed to both arsenic and BPA through drinking water and through scratched plastic containers used in contaminated areas. However, the combined effects of As and BPA on locomotor performance and neurobehavioral changes are yet to be investigated.

Giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) are versatile cell models in biomedical and environmental research. Of the various GUV production methods, hydrogel-assisted GUV production is most easily implemented in a typical biological laboratory. To date, agarose, polyvinyl alcohol, cross-linked dextran-PEG, polyacrylamide, and starch hydrogels have been used to produce GUVs.

Scandium (Sc) extraction from iron and aluminum waste is a promising technique for the recycling and valorization of laterite nickel ore waste. Iron and aluminum waste is one source of scandium during preparation of nickel and cobalt hydroxide by wet smelting of laterite nickel ore. The content of Sc is notably higher than that of the raw materials, as the element is enriched in the iron and aluminum waste.

Tracing the sources of each contaminant and its geochemical reactions requires a variety of geochemical tools. In this study, chemical compositions and isotopic ratios of O-H, Mo, and Zn were utilized to identify the sources and geochemical reactions of water, As, Mo, and Zn in the seepage from a mine tailings dump. The distinct chemical compositions observed between the seepage and monitoring well, along with the O-H isotopic ratios, suggested that the seepage originated from creek water rather than nearby groundwater, which was supported by a large seasonal variation of δMo in both the seepage and creek.

Urban stormwater pollution poses serious risks to human and environmental health, including trace metals toxicity. To improve the performance of existing highway Vegetated Filter Strips (VFS), which have limited performance for volume reduction and pollutant removal, amendment with a Vegetated Compost Blanket (VCB), a layer of seeded compost, has been proposed. A novel VCB/VFS system was assessed as a Stormwater Control Measure (SCM) via particulate matter and trace metals removal performance.
