Previous studies of the redox states of linear conjugated oligomers as models for polarons and bipolarons in conjugated polymers do not fully address the influence of intermolecular interactions on the electronic structure of conjugated systems in the solid state. Fusion of oligothiophenes onto a bicyclo[4.4.1]undecane core holds the conjugated oligomers in a permanent cofacial stack. One- and two-electron oxidation of the stacked oligomers affords mono(radical cation)s and dications that serve as models for polarons and bipolarons in p-doped conjugated polymers and demonstrates the effect of pi-stacking on the electronic structure of these species.

Background: Adamantane derivatives, such as memantine (Mem) and amantadine (Ada), have distinct mechanisms and therapeutic applications. Ada is primarily utilized as an antiviral and anti-Parkinson drug without significant pro-cognitive effects, Mem is effective in various clinical conditions characterized by cognitive deficits, including Alzheimer's disease. Recent evidence highlights a neuroprotective role for Aβ monomers, suggesting that preventing their aggregation into toxic oligomers could be a promising therapeutic strategy.

Starch-derived hydrophilic malto-oligosaccharides (Glc, where n = 1-7) conjugated to hydrophobic solanesol through click chemistry, i.e., Glc-b-Sol copolymers, have demonstrated significant promise in developing fully natural block co-oligomers for solid-state nanopatterning applications.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most commonly occurring brain disorder, characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau, subsequently leading to neurocognitive decline. 3-Amino-1-propanesulfonic acid (TPS) and its prodrug, currently under clinical trial III, serve as promising therapeutic agents targeting Aβ pathology by specifically preventing monomer-to-oligomer formation. Inspired by the potency of TPS prodrug, we hypothesized that conjugating TPS with human serum albumin (HSA) could enhance brain delivery and synergistically inhibit Aβ aggregation in mild to moderate AD.

High expression of drug efflux pump makes antibiotics ineffective against bacteria, leading to drug-resistant strains and even the emergence of "superbugs". Herein, we design and synthesize a dual functional o-nitrobenzene (NB)-modified conjugated oligo-polyfluorene vinylene (OPFV) photosensitizer, OPFV-NB, which can depress efflux pump activity and also possesses photodynamic therapy (PDT) for synergistically overcoming drug-resistant bacteria. Upon light irradiation, the OPFV-NB can produce aldehyde active groups to covalently bind outer membrane proteins, such as tolerant colicin (TolC), blocking drug efflux of bacteria.

Spiro architectures with π-conjugation have improved thermal stability and stronger photosensitivity, making them potentially useful for organic optoelectronic devices. Our recent work has demonstrated the synthetic chemistry of a novel thiophene oligomer combining 2,7-dihydrooxepine and dispiro structure and derived it into A-D-A-type compounds. The optical spectroscopy and electrochemical characteristics were investigated.
