Published: September 2006

Objectives: Mitomycin C (MMC) is an antibiotic-antineoplastic agent that decreases fibroblast proliferation and scar formation. We aimed to evaluate the effect of MMC on the size of antrostomy and the mucociliary clearance rate.

Methods: We selected 20 patients with chronic sinusitis on both sides. After middle meatal antrostomy, we selected one side, and a piece of Merocel soaked with 1.5 mL of MMC (0.4 mg/mL) was applied for 5 minutes. On the other side, normal saline solution was applied for a control. The size of the antrostomy was measured serially after surgery with a ruler. Mucociliary clearance was assessed by the saccharin test.

Results: The effect of MMC in maintaining the size of the antrostomy was only significant during the first month. The relative size (the ratio of the remaining antrostomy area compared to the area in the immediate postoperative period) in the first month was significantly greater on the MMC-treated side than on the control side. The results of the saccharin test were not different between the two sides.

Conclusions: Topical MMC application may have a short-term effect in maintaining the patency of the antrostomy site. However, it does not seem to improve the relative size over an extended period of time.

Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a condition that affects 5-12% of the general population. Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is the preferred treatment because of its few adverse effects and highest success rates. The most common post-operative consequences include synechia, nasal blockage, and disease recurrence.

: Endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery has become a viable alternative to open procedures for the surgical treatment of benign and malignant lesions in the sinonasal and skull base regions. As in sinus surgery, skull base surgery may cause crusting and posterior rhinorrhea, particularly when a nasoseptal flap is required for skull base reconstruction. Post-operative radiological sinonasal findings have been reported previously with no clear correlation with intraoperative decision-making.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate that complicated mucoceles of paranasal sinuses and their clinical presentation, complications of relations with size, destructions areas, extension limits in affected patients.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective review was performed on patients who were diagnosed and treated as paranasal sinus mucoceles at ENT department from 2002 to 2013 years. Patients' demographic data, mucoceles location, symptoms, surgical approach and complications were evaluated.

Closure of oroantral fistula using platelet rich fibrin with endoscopic middle meatal antrostomy.

BMC Oral Health

June 2024

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Alexandria University, Champlion St, Azrite, Alexandria, Egypt.

Background: Oroantral fistula (OAF) involves pathological, epithelialized, and unnatural communication between the maxillary sinus and oral cavity. Recently, functional endoscopic sinus surgery has provided minimally invasive treatment options with fewer postoperative complications. The aim of the study was to evaluate the one-stage endoscopic middle meatal antrostomy (EMMA) technique with the application of a platelet-rich fibrin membrane (PRF) for OAF closure and maxillary sinusitis relief.

The size and the position of the sinus antrostomy play a key role in making sinus grafting surgery more predictable and effective with less complications. A cone beam computed tomography and intraoral scan of the maxilla were taken for a patient who is missing maxillary first molar tooth with limited residual bone. Data were exported to the dynamic navigation (DN) system software.
