Osteonecrosis: A disabling disease not to be ignored in asthma and atopic conditions.

Ann Allergy Asthma Immunol

October 2024

The Department of Medicine, Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Electronic address:

Osteonecrosis, also referred to as avascular necrosis, is a disease characterized by necrosis or death of a bone secondary to impairment in blood supply. The condition affects the epiphyseal ends of the bones such as the femur and the humerus, but it can also involve the metacarpal and metatarsal bones, the patella, the knee, the vertebrae, and the jaw. A plethora of inflammatory, autoimmune, hematological, thrombotic, and vascular diseases can lead to osteonecrosis.

Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is a relatively rare side effect after prolonged use of bisphosphonates, which are drugs used to treat bone resorption in osteoporosis and certain cancers. This study introduces a novel ONJ model in rats by combining exposure to bisphosphonates, oral surgery, and bacterial inoculation. Potential ONJ preventive effects of polyguanidine (GuaDex) or antibiotics were evaluated.

LncRNA SNHG1 enhances cartilage regeneration by modulating chondrogenic differentiation and angiogenesis potentials of JBMMSCs via mitochondrial function regulation.

Stem Cell Res Ther

June 2024

Beijing Key Laboratory of Tooth Regeneration and Function Reconstruction, Beijing Stomatological Hospital, School of Stomatology, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China.

Background: Cartilage is a kind of avascular tissue, and it is difficult to repair itself when it is damaged. In this study, we investigated the regulation of chondrogenic differentiation and vascular formation in human jaw bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (h-JBMMSCs) by the long-chain noncoding RNA small nucleolar RNA host gene 1 (SNHG1) during cartilage tissue regeneration.

Methods: JBMMSCs were isolated from the jaws via the adherent method.
