Background And Objective: The Medtronic PS Medical Strata valve has pressure flow characteristics that are noninvasively adjusted with a magnetic tool. The objective of this study was to examine its efficacy during our initial experience with it in shunt-dependent children.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective review of 53 children with a median age of 2.0 years who had 61 Strata valves implanted.

Conclusion: The Strata valve is efficacious in the treatment of shunt-dependant hydrocephalus in children. The 1-year shunt survival rate of 67.2% is comparable to that previously reported from a multicenter trial. Of the 30 therapeutically aimed adjustments during the study period, 16 (53.3%) resulted in improvement in abnormal signs or symptoms. Our data indicate that adjustments can be used to treat signs or symptoms of cerebrospinal fluid overdrainage or underdrainage, which may obviate the need for additional surgery.

The association of the triglyceride-glucose index with the risk of atrial fibrillation: Analysis of the UK Biobank.

Nutr Metab Cardiovasc Dis

December 2024

Cardiometabolic Medicine Center, Department of Cardiology, Fuwai Hospital, National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, Beijing, China; State Key Laboratory of Cardiovascular Disease, 167, Beilishi Road, Xicheng District, Beijing, 100037, China. Electronic address:

Background And Aims: The relationship between the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and the incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF) remains insufficiently explored. This investigation aims to elucidate the association between the TyG index and the long-term risk of developing AF.

Methods And Results: This cohort study analyzed data from 409,705 participants sourced from the UK Biobank database.

Article Synopsis
  • * TAVI centers preferred aortic valve replacement (AVR) treatments, with a higher percentage opting for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) compared to non-TAVI centers (71% vs. 23%).
  • * Despite the differences in treatment frequency, both types of centers showed similar rates of all-cause death or heart failure hospitalizations over three years, indicating no significant outcome difference.

Background And Objectives: Programmable shunt valves (PSVs) used to treat hydrocephalus require specialized valve-specific devices that determine their setting. However, these devices are typically only accessible in major medical centers. This study explores the feasibility of using smartphone magnetometers to assess PSV settings.

Association between loneliness and incident atrial fibrillation across different genetic predisposition: findings from the UK Biobank.

Eur J Med Res

October 2024

Cardiometabolic Medicine Center, Fuwai Hospital, National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, No. 167, Beilishi Road, Xicheng District, Beijing, 100037, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Loneliness is linked to an increased long-term risk of atrial fibrillation (AF), according to a study of over 441,000 participants from the UK Biobank.
  • After a median follow-up of 13.9 years, those who reported feelings of loneliness had a 11% higher risk of developing AF compared to those who did not feel lonely.
  • The association was stronger in individuals without heart valve disease and remained consistent regardless of genetic susceptibility to AF.

Surgical management of native aortic valve leaflet avulsion during TAVR.

J Cardiothorac Surg

July 2024

Cardiology Associates of Schenectady, St. Peter's Health Partners, 2546 Balltown Road Suite 300, Schenectady, NY, 12309, USA.

Background: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has increased in utilization since its approval for management of aortic stenosis patients across all risk strata. We report a rare case of aortic valve leaflet avulsion after balloon expandable TAVR managed with urgent surgery.

Case Presentation: A 78-year-old male underwent TAVR complicated by avulsion of the native aortic valve leaflet's left coronary cusp.
