Ambient mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) enables hundreds of analytes in tissue sections to be directly mapped at atmospheric pressure with minimal sample preparation. This field is currently experiencing rapid growth, with numerous reported ambient ionization techniques resulting in a "hundred flowers bloom" situation. Nanospray desorption electrospray ionization (nano-DESI), developed by the Laskin group in 2010, is a widely used liquid-extraction-based ambient ionization technique that was first used for mass spectrometry imaging of tissue in 2012.

Amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptide accumulation on blood vessels in the brain is a hallmark of neurodegeneration. While Aβ peptides constrict cerebral arteries and arterioles, their impact on capillaries is less understood. Aβ was recently shown to constrict brain capillaries through pericyte contraction, but whether-and if so how-Aβ affects endothelial cells (ECs) remains unknown.

A microanalytical technique based on the photothermal effect in conjunction with back-scattering interferometry (BSI) using a single laser beam was developed for quantitative detection of heavy metals. After the chromogenic reaction of an analyte in a capillary tube, the photothermal effect induced by irradiation with the same laser beam leads to a change of the refractive index of the solution, which can be "quantified" using the BSI technique. For prove-of-concept, Cu(II) was chosen as the trial analyte, for which the solution changes to purplish through reacting with the chromogenic reagent; a single laser beam of 532 nm was adapted for both inducing the photothermal effect and realizing BSI detection.

Copper and its alloys with transition metals (as good conductors of electricity and heat) are extensively used in electrical industry, electronics, and cooling systems and can be the subject of surface degradation by oxidation. In certain circumstances, surface degradation of copper occurs catastrophically. Predicting catastrophic oxidation kinetics and developing protective technology require understanding the mass transfer mechanisms in the solid/liquid/gas composite scale formed on the copper surface during catastrophic degradation.

An analytical method for identifying the chemical constituents in the Chinese herbal combination Jiuwei decoction was established using capillary electrophoresis coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Nine herbs were extracted with a 60:40 (v/v) ethanol/water solution to prepare the Jiuwei decoction. Electrophoretic separation was carried out using a 50 µm i.
