Observations are reported for the first time of significant nondipole effects in the photoionization of the outer-valence orbitals of diatomic molecules. Measured nondipole angular-distribution parameters for the 3sigma(g), 1pi(u), and 2sigma(u) shells of N2 exhibit spectral variations with incident photon energies from thresholds to approximately 200 eV which are attributed via concomitant calculations to particular final-state symmetry waves arising from (E1)multiply sign in circle(M1,E2) radiation-matter interactions first-order in photon momentum. Comparisons with previously reported K-edge studies in N2 verify linear scaling with photon momentum, accounting in part for the significantly enhanced nondipole behavior observed in inner-shell ionization at correspondingly higher momentum values in this molecule.

The electric dipole approximation is commonly adopted in the theoretical investigation of light-atom/molecule interaction, wherein the magnetic component of the driving electromagnetic field is neglected. Our study highlights the significant role of the magnetic field effect in the recollision dynamics of nonsequential double ionization (NSDI) driven by a mid-infrared laser. Due to the magnetic component of the laser field, in the multiple-returning events, the tunneling electron with a large initial momentum along the laser magnetic field direction at some specific tunneling time is inefficient for NSDI.

Long-term persistency of a strong non-dipole field in the South Atlantic.

Nat Commun

Instituto de Astronomia, Geofísica e Ciências Atmosféricas, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, SP, Brazil.

Earth's magnetic field exhibits a dominant dipole morphology. Notwithstanding, significant deviations from the dipole are evident today, particularly the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), characterized by anomalously low-field intensity and high directional variability, diminishing the field's shielding effect. To assess the persistence of SAA-like features over multimillion-year scales, we combine paleomagnetic data from Trindade Island (20°30'S, 29°22'W) with an evaluation of paleosecular variation (PSV) over the past 10 Myr.

Role of the Binding Energy on Nondipole Effects in Single-Photon Ionization.

We experimentally study the influence of the binding energy on nondipole effects in K-shell single-photon ionization of atoms at high photon energies. We find that for each ionization event, as expected by momentum conservation, the photon momentum is transferred almost fully to the recoiling ion. The momentum distribution of the electrons becomes asymmetrically deformed along the photon propagation direction with a mean value of 8/(5c)(E_{γ}-I_{P}) confirming an almost 100 year old prediction by Sommerfeld and Schur [Ann.

We investigate experimentally and theoretically the C and O 1s photoionization of fixed-in-space CO molecules at a photon energy of 905 eV. We find a significant dependence of the photoelectron angular distributions on the direction of propagation of the ionizing radiation. It results from an interplay of nondipole effects, on one hand, and molecular effects, on the other.

Nondipole effects in processes assisted by a THz field having the strength of a few MV/cm can be significant due to its long wavelength. We illustrate this for strong-laser-field-induced ionization assisted by a THz field. To this end, we generalize our strong-field-approximation theory so that it includes the first-order term in a 1/c expansion of the vector potential.
