We report results of a systematic experimental study of interactions between charged polystyrene (PS) latex spheres at a water-air interface. Optical observations of stable bonded particle clusters and formation of circular chainlike structures at the interface demonstrate that the interaction potential is of dipole origin. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is used to examine the distribution of charge groups on the colloidal surface. AFM phase images show patchy domains of size approximately 100 nm on the particle surface, indicating that the surface charge distribution of the PS spheres is not uniform, as is commonly believed. Such patchy charges can introduce fluctuating in-plane dipoles, leading to an attraction at short interparticle separations. A theoretical analysis is given to explain the mechanism for attractions between like-charged particles at the interface.

Understanding the environment-dependent stability and photoluminescence (PL) properties of advanced perovskite materials remains a challenge with conflicting views. Herein, we investigated the influence of the host matrix (poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS)) and atmospheric conditions (ambient and N) on the PL properties of a CsPbBr perovskite quantum dot (PQD) using single-particle spectroscopy. Despite the same PL blinking mechanism, the PL properties of the PQD were considerably affected by the environmental conditions.

The large numbers of ion exchange resins used in various industries (food, pharmaceutitics, mining, hydrometallurgy), and especially in water treatment, are based on cross-linked polystyrene and divinylbenzene copolymers with functional groups capable of ion exchange. Their advantage, which makes them environmentally friendly, is the possibility of their regeneration and reuse. Taking into account the wide application of these materials, styrene-divinylbenzene resin with a quaternary ammonium functional group, AmberliteIRA402, was characterized using a well-known and widely used method, FT-IR spectroscopy.

The chemical recycling of polystyrene (PS) waste to value-added aromatic compounds is an attractive but formidable challenge due to the inertness of the C-C bonds in the polymer backbone. Here we develop a light-driven, copper-catalyzed protocol to achieve aerobic oxidation of various alkylarenes or real-life PS waste to benzoic acid and oxidized styrene oligomers. The resulting oligomers can be further transformed under heating conditions, thus achieving benzoic acid in up to 65% total yield through an integrated one-pot two-step procedure.

In aquatic environments, the deposition behaviors of nanoplastics (NPs) are closely associated with interfacial interaction between NPs and iron (hydr)oxides minerals, which are typically coupled with solution chemistry and organic matter. However, the roles of solution chemistry and organic matter in the deposition behavior of NPs with iron (hydr)oxides minerals and related interfacial interaction mechanism are still poorly understood. In this study, the deposition behaviors of carboxyl-modified polystyrene nanoparticles (COOH-PSNPs) with magnetite were systematically investigated.

The proliferation of micro/nanoplastics (MNPs) has emerged as a pivotal environmental issue, largely due to their potential for human exposure. Consequently, the development of sensitive and efficient detection methodologies is paramount for elucidating their environmental footprint. Here, we report a novel three-dimensional (3D) surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor, which integrate TiCT/TiO/WO semiconductor heterostructure, for the rapid and sensitive detection of MNPs in environmental matrices.
