Well-defined polyacrylamide-polystyrene copolymers were grafted from the fibrillar clay, attapulgite, by a four-step self-assembly process: (i) the gamma-aminopropyltriethoxyl silane was self-assembled onto the surfaces of the attapulgite; (ii) the surface amino groups were amidated with bromoacetylbromide; (iii) the bromo-acetamide modified attapulgite was used as macro-initiator for the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene with the catalyst of the complex of 1,10-phenanthroline and Cu(I)Br; (iv) the polystyrene grafted attapulgite was then used as macroinitiator for the polymerization of acrylamide. The two steps of the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerizations were all conducted under ultrasonic irradiation at room temperature. The product, polyacrylamide-polystyrene copolymers grafted attapulgite, had been characterized with elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and transmission electron microscopy.

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with ultra-small size anchored onto support materials is highly desired towards good catalytic performance. In this study, aldehyde-functionalized chitin nanocrystals (ChNCs-PVMA) are prepared by surface-initiated electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ARGET ATRP) with vanillin methacrylate (VMA) as a functional monomer, which are used as reductant, stabilizer and support for the fabrication of AuNPs through an environmentally friendly process that eliminates the need for any additional reducing agents. The abundant aldehyde groups of the prepared ChNCs-PVMA are crucial to achieve ultra-small AuNPs with average size of 5.

This study introduces a novel water-insoluble dispersant for coal water slurry (CWS), namely, a poly(sodium styrene sulfonate)- SiO nanoparticle (SiO--PSSNa). SiO--PSSNa was synthesized by combining the surface acylation reaction with surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) verified that SiO--PSSNa with the desired structure was successfully obtained.

The synthesis, characterization and evaluation of cellulose-graft-poly(4-vinylpirydine) for heavy metal removal from wastewater, is reported. Cellulose was obtained from a corn cob biomass using a recently developed gas-phase acid pretreatment process (GPAPP). The obtained corn cob cellulose (CCC) was functionalized by partial esterification of the superficial -OH groups with α-bromoisobutyryl bromide (BIBB) under mild conditions (room temperature and dimethyl formamide, DMF as solvent).

Chitin nanocrystals (ChNCs), prepared from a down-sizing process from chitin, have recently captured great attention to access sustainable nanomaterials. The surface modification of ChNCs is crucial to regulate the surface physicochemical properties and introduce specific functions, thus satisfying their diverse applications. In this study, aldehyde-functionalized ChNCs (ChNCs-PVMA) with enhanced hydrophobicity were developed via surface-initiated activators regenerated by electron transfer for atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ARGET ATRP) of a lignin-derived polymerizable aldehyde monomer, vanillin methacrylate (VMA).

In this study, a graphene oxide combined with poly(2-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (GO@PDEAEMA) nanocomposite was synthesized for the separation and enrichment of Cd and Pb from food and water samples using the dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (d-μ-SPE) technique. The GO@PDEAEMA nanocomposite was synthesized using surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) and characterized using various analytical techniques, such as FTIR, FE-SEM, TGA, BET, and XRD. The optimal experimental conditions were pH 8, 0.
