Background: The tobacco thrips (Frankliniella fusca Hinds; family Thripidae; order Thysanoptera) is an important pest that can transmit viruses such as the tomato spotted wilt orthotospovirus to numerous economically important agricultural row crops and vegetables. The structural and functional genomics within the order Thysanoptera has only begun to be explored. Within the > 7000 known thysanopteran species, the melon thrips (Thrips palmi Karny) and the western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis Pergrande) are the only two thysanopteran species with assembled genomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Cassava mosaic disease is caused by begomoviruses transmitted by whiteflies, existing as populations with two essential genome segments (DNA-A and DNA-B) that must be transmitted together for infection.
  • The study focused on how different titers of these DNA segments in infected cassava plants influenced the whiteflies' ability to acquire and transmit each segment.
  • Results showed that the acquisition probabilities of ACMV segments were not directly related to their plant titers, while EACMCV segment acquisition did reflect this; however, the transmission ratios remained consistent, suggesting a balance for the highest transmission efficiency.

Cassava is a root crop important for global food security and the third biggest source of calories on the African continent. Cassava production is threatened by Cassava mosaic disease (CMD), which is caused by a complex of single-stranded DNA viruses (family: , genus: ) that are transmitted by the sweet potato whitefly (). Understanding the dynamics of different cassava mosaic begomovirus (CMB) species through time is important for contextualizing disease trends.

Resistant varieties are critical tools for crop production, and single-resistance genes providing strong protection against pests or pathogens are deployed in agriculture. Durability of these traits is threatened by emergence of resistance-breaking pests and pathogens. This review focuses on acylsugar-mediated resistance in tomato.
