A combined HPLC-UV/PAD and HPLC-ESI/MS method allowing the fast detection and identification/structural characterisation of lignans of different structural subclasses is described. Twenty-four lignans of different skeletal types were analysed and the combined information derived from their UV and ESI/MS spectra led to the identification of group characteristics that can be used to establish the structure of unknown lignans in plant samples. This method was successfully applied to the identification of lignans in crude extracts of Linum usitatissimum L. and L. bienne Mill.

Background/objectives: species are renowned in traditional medicine for their diverse therapeutic properties, including potential anticancer activities. This study explored the antiproliferative potential of six species by integrating chemical composition with bioactivity assays to identify key antiproliferative compounds.
Methods: The integration of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based chemical composition data with antiproliferative activity against three cancer cell lines-PC-3 (prostate adenocarcinoma), SiHa (cervical carcinoma), and A549 (lung carcinoma)-as well as a normal mouse fibroblast line (L929) was performed by covariate analysis.

In this work, we describe the results of a computational investigation aimed at identifying potential biological targets of honokiol, magnolol and a series of synthetic prodrug derivatives obtained through esterification of the free hydroxyl groups. The ligand-based and structure-based analyses revealed that these compounds potentially interact with several biological targets, some of which are known while others are new. Honokiol, magnolol, and three of the newly synthesized derivatives may bind to estrogen receptors ERα and ERβ.

Sanhua Decoction (SHD) is a classic prescription for the treatment of stroke in the clinic. Based on the combination strategy in vitro and in vivo, the chemical constituents of SHD were characterized by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry, and the metabolites of five effective anthraquinone aglycones (emodin, chrysophanol, rhein, aloe-emodin, and physcion) of rhubarb in SHD were studied. A total of 222 compounds were isolated and identified in vitro, including 50 flavonoids and their glycosides, 41 coumarins, 22 anthraquinones, 22 tannins, 14 phenylpropanoids, 16 alkaloids, 18 organic acids and their esters, 14 lignans, six anthrones, and 19 other compounds.
