AI Article Synopsis

  • Typical carcinoid tumors are uncommon and difficult to diagnose through sputum cytology, with limited documented cases.
  • A 71-year-old nonsmoker experienced a persistent cough and after two negative sputum tests, a third sample revealed tumor fragments due to partial expulsion of an endobronchial mass.
  • The rarity of diagnosing typical carcinoid tumors through sputum is highlighted, as they are usually covered by bronchial mucosa, with this case being a rare exception previously reported only once.

Article Abstract

Background: Typical carcinoid (TC) tumors are relatively infrequent. Diagnosis on the basis of sputum cytology is difficult, and there are few cases reported in the literature. Partial expectoration of endobronchial tumors is a rare event that permits their cytologic diagnosis.

Case: A 71-year-old, male nonsmoker sought medical attention for a cough and expectoration of 1 month's duration. After 2 negative sputum tests, the third sample revealed large tumor fragments as a result of partial expectoration of an endobronchial, growing mass.

Conclusion: The diagnosis of TC is rarely made by sputum examination as the tumor is generally covered with intact bronchial mucosa. However, in our case there was partial expectoration of the tumor. This has been reported just once before in the literature.

Rationale: The mortality rate associated with pulmonary hemorrhage induced by leptospirosis is notably high. Available treatment modalities are limited, and their efficacy has not been fully demonstrated. Here, we present the case report of a patient with leptospirosis-induced pulmonary hemorrhagic syndrome.

Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are emerging as important drugs for patients with locally advanced esophageal cancer (EC). Yet, immune-related adverse events (irAEs) may be a major obstacle for these population. Multidisciplinary team (MDT) is an efficient way to deal with such conditions.

Background: Bronchiectasis clinically manifests airway mucus hypersecretion as mucopurulent sputum production and chronic cough. In the past decade, Tanreqing injection (TRQ) has been often used in clinical practice as an add-on treatment for bronchiectasis in China. Several in vivo studies have indicated that TRQ is effective in improving sputum expectoration and cough in acute exacerbation of bronchiectasis but results of individual studies are inconsistent.

Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Lishui Municipal Central Hospital, Lishui, Zhejiang, 323000, P.R. China.

Article Synopsis
  • Pulmonary sclerosing haemangioma (PSH) is an uncommon benign lung tumor mostly found in young to middle-aged women, often presenting as a single nodule, but can occasionally show multiple cavitary lesions.
  • A patient with multiple nodules in one lung lobe, who exhibited symptoms similar to tuberculosis, was diagnosed with PSH after undergoing a biopsy and surgery.
  • The case highlights the challenge of diagnosing PSH, which can be mistaken for more serious conditions like lung cancer or tuberculosis; surgical treatment typically results in a positive outcome.

Article Synopsis
  • Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) in patients with autoimmune diseases has a higher mortality rate compared to those with HIV-PCP, prompting a study to identify risk factors for mortality.
  • A retrospective study of 38 patients revealed a mortality rate of 18%, with significant factors for increased mortality including male gender, high serum creatinine and C-reactive protein, and low levels of albumin and immunoglobulin A.
  • No patients received prophylactic treatment with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, highlighting a gap in preventive care for this vulnerable population.
