Published: July 2006

Objective: To observe treatment effects of primary lower limb lymphedema using ultrasonic assisted liposuction.

Methods: Internal ultrasonic liposculpture system combined postoperative continual elastic stockings or bandages were used for reducing lymphatic burdens of the affected limbs by partly removal of lymphedematous tissues.

Results: Edema regression in the affected limbs were obvious at 2 weeks postoperative and kept to stable without recurrence during 1 year follow-up.

Conclusions: Ultrasonic assisted liposuction combined with elastic compression is safe and effective for the treatment of primary limb lymphedema.

Indocyanine Green Lymphography in Conservative Lymphedema Management: An Exploration of the Impact on Lymphedema Therapy Plans.

Semin Oncol Nurs

December 2024

Occupational Therapy Department, Princess Alexandra Hospital, and The School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

Objectives: Information from indocyanine green (ICG) lymphography (ICG-L) can be used to guide an individual's lymphedema therapy plan. However, the mechanisms for this clinical translation are not well described. This study proposes a novel clinical decision support tool for translating ICG-L findings into individualized lymphedema therapy plans and describes subsequent changes in plan features of manual lymphatic drainage and compression.

Background: Prophylactic lymphovenous bypass (pLVB) is a microsurgical technique aimed to prevent breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) after axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) by redirecting lymphatic flow from the ligated lymphatics into neighboring veins. This report describes the authors' 9-year institutional experience of pLVB in patients undergoing ALND to prevent BCRL.

Methods: Patients who underwent ALND were reviewed.

Purpose: The Gynecologic Cancer Lymphedema Questionnaire (GCLQ) is an established patient-reported outcome measure for lower extremity lymphedema (LEL) in gynecologic oncology. We aimed to validate the GCLQ in German language (GCLQ-GER) for lymphedema detection in German-speaking patients and also investigated real-world patterns of lymphedema treatment.

Methods: The GCLQ was translated from English into German in accordance with the standards of a professional translation process.

Primary Lymphedema: Anatomically Isolated or a Pervasive Systemic Disorder?

Plast Reconstr Surg Glob Open

December 2024

From the Department of Plastic Surgery, Center for Lymphedema Research and Reconstruction, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH.

Background: Primary lymphedema, a condition characterized by impaired lymphatic function, has long remained underexplored. Current diagnostic approaches rely on clinical history and genetic testing, yet the genetic underpinnings remain elusive in many cases. Traditional thinking suggests that primary lymphedema is confined to specific anatomical regions, but our experience challenges this notion.
