Aim: Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is usually surgically created in a patient's upper extremity to provide adequate blood flow during haemodialysis. Blood flow distal to an AVF is altered and theoretically could change pulse oximetry (SpO2) reading, systemic blood pressure and skin temperature. The authors conducted a prospective case-control study to measure changes in these parameters in the upper extremity of patients who have had an AVF.
Methods: In patients with an upper extremity AVF, the authors conducted a prospective case-control study using the patient's own non-AVF upper extremity as the control. The authors evaluated other factors that may have influenced blood flow changes distal to an AV fistula like gender, presence of AVF aneurysm, peripheral vascular disease, diabetes mellitus and vasodilator therapy.
Results: Thirty patients were enrolled, skin temperature and blood pressure were significantly altered in the hand distal to the AVF, but there was no significant change in the SpO2.
Conclusion: An upper extremity AVF alters blood pressure and temperature measurements when compared with the contralateral non-AVF side, but there is no difference in SpO2 provided an adequate signal quality is detected.

Background: As surgical interventions for lymphedema become increasingly available, it is important to understand characteristics of patients that undergo lymphedema surgery. The goal of this study was to define clinical variables of patients evaluated at a medical center who underwent lymphedema surgery to better inform which referred patients are surgical candidates.
Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was performed on patients referred to plastic surgery for lymphedema between January 2016 and June 2023.

Interscalene blocks, commonly used for shoulder surgery analgesia, often cause transient phrenic nerve palsy, leading to hemi-diaphragmatic paresis. This complication is particularly problematic in patients with pulmonary comorbidities and has been extensively investigated. However, its impact on patients with Fontan physiology remains less understood with limited representation in the literature.

In order to provide some references for vein approach selection in adrenal vein sampling (AVS), this retrospective study analyzed 325 cases of primary aldosteronism (PA) patients who underwent AVS via the upper extremity vein approach, comparing the differences in complications and visual analogue scale (VAS) scores through median cubital vein (MCV), basilic vein (BV), and cephalic vein (CV). The results indicated no significant difference in the incidence of venous spasm (right MCV vs. right BV vs.

This study compared the degree of secondary hyperalgesia and somatosensory threshold changes induced by topical capsaicin between spinal and trigeminal innervation. This crossover clinical trial included 40 healthy individuals in which 0.25 g of 1% capsaicin cream was randomly applied for 45 minutes to a circular area of 2 cm to the skin covering the masseter muscle and forearm in 2 different sessions, separated by at least 24 hours and no more than 72 hours (washout period).
