The humidity present in ambient atmosphere affects the adhesion of small particles by causing capillary bridge formation between the particle and the surface. Even in moderate relative humidities this, usually attractive, force can have a significant effect on adhesion behaviour of micro and sub-micro particles. We have directly measured the pull-off forces of initially adhered oxide particles on oxide surfaces with atomic force microscope in controlled atmosphere with adjustable humidity. We demonstrate the effect of the surface roughness resulting in two different regions of capillary formation and the particle shape having a strong effect on the humidity dependency of adhesion. The experimental results are explained by theoretical framework.
The cooling power of radiative cooling (RC) coatings depends not only on the radiative properties of the coating but also on environmental variables. In tropical environments, the cooling performance of RC coatings deteriorates due to high humidity and high solar radiation. Previous studies focused on developing high solar-reflective coatings to achieve subambient cooling in tropical environments.

Liquid crystals (LCs), when interfaced with chemically functionalized surfaces, can amplify a range of chemical and physical transformations into optical outputs. While metal cation-binding sites on surfaces have been shown to provide a basis for the design of chemoresponsive LCs, the cations have been found to dissociate from the surfaces and dissolve slowly into LCs, resulting in time-dependent changes in the properties of LC-solid interfaces (which impacts the reliability of devices incorporating such surfaces). Here, we explore the use of surfaces comprising metal-coordinating polymers to minimize the dissolution of metal cations into LCs and characterize the impact of the interfacial environment created by the coordinating polymer on the ordering and time-dependent properties of LCs.
