Evidence about the remarkable acidic nature of molecular water adsorbed at the surface of mesoporous MCM-41 silicoaluminas (MSA) with a ratio of Si/Al = 25 is reported, coming from both infrared spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. By using CO as a probe, OH stretching and HOH bending modes of water adsorbed on coordinatively unsaturated Al ions (Lewis sites) at the surface of MSA have been detected for the first time. CO adsorption causes OH stretching frequencies to suffer a bathochromic shift of about -200/-250 cm(-1), whereas the HOH bending frequency undergoes a hypsochromic shift by about +10/+20 cm(-1). B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) calculations on model clusters designed to mimic both Brønsted and Lewis sites validate the assignments, showing that water adsorbed on the surface Lewis site, when interacting with CO, shows an acidity comparable to that of a classical zeolitic Brønsted site.

Ofloxacin, a commonly prescribed antibiotic, raises serious environmental concerns due to its persistence in aquatic systems. This study offers new insights into the environmental behavior of ofloxacin and its interactions with carbon-based adsorbents with the aim of enhancing our understanding of its removal mechanisms via adsorption processes. Encapsulation of Oil Droplets Using Film-Forming Janus Nanoparticles.

Polymer Janus nanoparticles with one hard cross-linked polystyrene lobe and one soft film-forming poly(methyl methacrylate--butyl acrylate) lobe were synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT)-mediated emulsion polymerization. The Janus nanoparticles adsorbed to oil/water and air/water interfaces, where the soft lobes coalesced, forming films of thickness between 25 and 250 nm; droplets of silicone oil could be stably encapsulated in polymer in this way. When prepared by mechanical mixing without additives, capsules of diameter 5-500 μm could be prepared, and with additives and application of heat, capsules of diameter around 5 μm were achieved, even with highly viscous silicone oil (20,000 cSt).

The Role of Surfactant in Electrocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction in the Absence of Metal Cations.

Carbon dioxide electroreduction does not occur on Au when metal cations are absent from the electrode surfaces. Here we show that the electroreduction can be enabled without metal cations, albeit with low efficiency, by the presence of cationic surfactants on Au. The findings demonstrate that in addition to possibly stabilizing CO reduction intermediates the presence of surfactants plays a role in suppressing the competing reactions.
