Purpose: To report clinical and histopathological characteristics of postoperative amyloidosis recurrence in a patient with lattice corneal dystrophy (LCD) type I.

Methods: The clinical manifestation of recurrent amyloidosis in the residual stroma was delineated in a patient with LCD type I after deep lamellar keratoplasty (DLKP) for 6.5 years. Complete removal of the residual recipient stroma and regrafting of a new cryopreserved donor button were accomplished by a secondary DLKP. The primary DLKP donor graft and the underlying residual stroma of the recipient obtained by the secondary DLKP were examined for analysis of histopathologic and ultrastructural changes.

Results: A tongue-shaped retained stroma with linear opacity was observed underneath the primary DLKP donor graft. The retained stromal layer was thoroughly detached from Descemet membrane, removed, and followed by grafting a new cryopreserved button. The primary donor button exhibited a normal epithelium, fewer keratocytes, an intact Descemet membrane, and mild positive Congo red staining in the middle layer of the stroma. The total retained recipient stroma removed by the secondary DLKP measured approximately 20 mum in thickness, showing thick and massive amyloid accumulation. The surface of the removed residual stroma toward Descemet membrane showed collagen fibers in an interwoven fashion without bundle structure under a scanning electron microscope.

Conclusion: Incomplete removal of the recipient stroma by DLKP can lead to the recurrence of amyloidosis in the residual stroma in patients with LCD. Clinical and histologic findings in the primary graft and in the residual recipient stroma implicate stromal genesis of recurrence of LCD after DLKP.

Background: Endometrial stromal sarcomas (ESS) are rare uterine mesenchymal tumors that histologically resemble endometrial stroma of functioning endometrium. The key characteristic of those tumors is the difficulty to diagnose preoperatively that leads to high rate of misdiagnosis. The aim of this case report is to present an extremely rare mutation of these already rare tumors and urge for more personalized therapies in the future.

Purpose: To evaluate the clinical outcome of laser-assisted surgical correction of high hyperopic or mixed astigmatism using small incision intrastromal lenticule rotation (SMILERO) alone or combined with photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).

Methods: This retrospective case series enrolled 25 eyes with high astigmatism that underwent SMILERO surgery. Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA), manifest refraction, central corneal thickness, and corneal higher order aberrations were analyzed before surgery and after 3, 6, and 12 months of follow-up.

Surgical management of an extensive nasal mass in an adolescent: insights from diagnostic imaging and histopathology.

J Surg Case Rep

January 2025

Department of Research, Universidad Francisco Marroquín, 13 av, Guatemala City 01011, Guatemala.

A 17-year-old female presented with a mass in the right nasal fossa and eye protrusion. Imaging revealed a large osseous mass originating from the right turbinates, causing exophthalmos without tissue invasion. A partial resection via the Caldwell-Luc approach was performed, but hemodynamic instability halted the procedure, leaving a residual mass.

Purpose: This study aimed to determine estrogen receptor (ER) expression in stromal cells in postchemotherapy tumor bed (PCTB) and its relationship with tumor regression and tumor characteristics.

Methods: The study included 490 breast cancer patients who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). We performed ER in stromal cells in all resection specimens and available pre-treatment core biopsy materials of 299 patients immunohistochemically.

To investigate the prognostic value of deep learning-based automated quantification of tumor-stroma ratio (TSR) in patients undergoing neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) for breast cancer. Specimens were collected from 209 breast cancer patients who received NAT at Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University from October 2019 to June 2023. TSR levels in pre-NAT biopsy specimens were automatically computed using a deep learning algorithm and categorized into low stroma (TSR≤30%), intermediate stroma (TSR 30% to ≤60%), and high stroma (TSR>60%) groups.
