The assembly and function of cilia on Caenorhabditis elegans neurons depends on the action of two kinesin-2 motors, heterotrimeric kinesin-II and homodimeric OSM-3-kinesin, which cooperate to move the same intraflagellar transport (IFT) particles along microtubule (MT) doublets. Using competitive in vitro MT gliding assays, we show that purified kinesin-II and OSM-3 cooperate to generate movement similar to that seen along the cilium in the absence of any additional regulatory factors. Quantitative modeling suggests that this could reflect an alternating action mechanism, in which the motors take turns to move along MTs, or a mechanical competition, in which the motors function in a concerted fashion to move along MTs with the slow motor exerting drag on the fast motor and vice versa. In vivo transport assays performed in Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) protein and IFT motor mutants favor a mechanical competition model for motor coordination in which the IFT motors exert a BBS protein-dependent tension on IFT particles, which controls the IFT pathway that builds the cilium foundation.

Dyneins are huge motor protein complexes that are essential for cell motility, cell division, and intracellular transport. Dyneins are classified into three major subfamilies, namely cytoplasmic, intraflagellar-transport (IFT), and ciliary dyneins, based on their intracellular localization and functions. Recently, several near-atomic resolution structures have been reported for cytoplasmic/IFT dyneins.

Nanofluids have the capacity to reduce interfacial tension (IFT) of crude oil and water for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) operations, but traditional nanoparticles are limited in tight reservoirs due to their inappropriate size for micro-nano pores and their tendency to aggregate. In this paper, Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs) with simple and favorable properties are developed, and their performance and mechanism for reducing IFT are evaluated. The paper also aims to explore the effects of GQD precursor type, synthesis duration, and molar percentages of precursors on reducing IFT.

This study reports the demulsification activity of a newly developed nonionic demulsifier (NID) via the condensation of glycolic acid ethoxylate lauryl ether with amine. The demulsification performance of the developed NID was assessed under room and moderate temperatures (25 and 60 °C), while the concentrations of NID were varied from 100 to 700 ppm at both temperatures in order to observe their oil-water separation efficiency. The demulsification mechanism was expatiated by determining the viscosity and elastic modulus of emulsion in the presence and absence of the NID.

How cells regulate the size of their organelles remains a fundamental question in cell biology. Cilia, with their simple structure and surface localization, provide an ideal model for investigating organelle size control. However, most studies on cilia length regulation are primarily performed on several single-celled organisms.

Enhancing heavy oil recovery is crucial to ensuring stable crude oil production. The development of stimulus-responsive Janus Pickering emulsifiers tailored for a reservoir environment has garnered significant attention in the field of reservoir production, emerging as a promising alternative to traditional surfactants. In this study, silica-based Janus nanosheets with temperature-responsive properties (OH-SiO-PSBMA JNs) are synthesized using sol-gel process and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method.
