Background: C-reactive protein is a crucial risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Previous studies demonstrated that in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), levels of this protein elevate dependently on the degree of upper airway obstruction. However, it has not been determined whether the surgery for OSAS reduces the levels of C-reactive protein by restoring the airway opening. Therefore, we evaluated the effect of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) on levels of serum C-reactive protein in patients with this syndrome.

Methods: Fifteen adult patients with mild to severe OSAS were enrolled in this study. Levels of serum C-reactive protein and sleep parameters including apnea-hypopnea index a month before and 3 months after UPPP were evaluated using peripheral venous blood and polysomnography, respectively.

Results: Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty significantly restored sleep parameters, accompanying with decreased levels of C-reactive protein (from 0.21 +/- 0.17 to 0.10 +/- 0.16 mg/dL, P < .05).

Conclusions: In patients with OSAS, UPPP appears to decrease levels of serum C-reactive protein. Surgical therapy may reduce inflammatory response in these patients.

BACKGROUND This study aimed to analyze the risk factors of central nervous system (CNS) infection caused by reactivation of varicella zoster virus (VZV) and provide reference for the prevention and early diagnosis of VZV-associated CNS infection. MATERIAL AND METHODS A prospective study was conducted on 1030 patients with acute herpes zoster (HZ) admitted to our hospital from January 2021 to June 2023. According to clinical manifestations and auxiliary examinations, they were divided into HZ group of 990 patients and VZV-associated CNS infection group of 40 patients.

Cytokine storm syndromes such as hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD), and COVID-19 cytokine storm (CCS) are characterized by markedly elevated inflammatory cytokines. However clinical measurement of serum cytokines is not widely available. This study examined the clinical utility of C-reactive protein (CRP) and ferritin, two inexpensive and widely available inflammatory markers, for distinguishing HLH from AOSD and CCS.

Intrapartum fever is a common complication in parturients undergoing epidural analgesia (EA), significantly increasing the incidence of maternal and infant complications. This study aims to develop and validate a prediction model for intrapartum fever related to chorioamnionitis (IFTC) in parturients undergoing epidural analgesia. A total of 596 parturients with fever (axillary temperature ≥ 38℃) who received EA from January 2020 to December 2023 were included and randomly assigned to the training set (N = 417) and the validation set (N = 179) according to the ratio of 7:3.

Early detection of a premetabolic status that is at risk for metabolic syndrome (MetS) but not meeting the criteria is crucial. This study examined 27,623 participants aged 20-50 (mean: 40.7) years who underwent initial health screening at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital (2011-2019), focusing on individuals with one or two MetS components.

Background: Albumin, a vital component in regulating human blood oncotic pressure, plays an important role in the prediction of prognosis in pediatric patients.Previous research identified significant differences in serum albumin levels of healthy and critically ill children.

Methods: The present study aims to investigate the correlation between albumin levels measured during pediatric intensive care unit(PICU) admission and clinical outcomes.
