Chemical sedimentation method of coproovoscopic diagnosis of trematodoses was modified: sodium nitrate was replaced by sodium nitrite (this increased the helminthic egg membrane hydrophilia) and the optimal ratio of sodium nitrite to acetic acid solution volumes was experimentally selected. This improved the method sensitivity twofold (p less than 0.001). Three series of investigations of the sensitivities of the modified chemical sedimentation method, microscopy of the native smear, Kato's, Hein's, Kalantaryan's, Stoll's methods, and ether-formalin sedimentation of helminthic eggs were carried out with the material from opisthorchiasis patients with invasion of low intensity. The modified technique proved to be the most sensitive (p less than 0.01) and productive (p less than 0.001). It is recommended for screening the population at endemic regions and for control analyses after etiotropic therapy of trematodosis patients.

Colloidal gels, ubiquitous in industrial applications, can undergo reversible solid-to-liquid transitions. Recent work demonstrates that adding surface roughness to primary particles enhances the toughness and influences the self-healing properties of colloidal gels. In the present work, we first use colloidal probe atomic force microscopy (CP-AFM) to assess the quantitative changes in adhesive and frictional forces between thermoresponsive particles as a function of their roughness.

Anaerobic treatment of tapioca wastewater has a long processing time. This study aims to evaluate ethanol fermentation as an effective treatment of tapioca wastewater. Simulated tapioca wastewater with an average chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 6900 mg L was treated in a four-column anaerobic baffled reactor for 300 d.

Dry powder inhalers (DPI's) are becoming increasingly popular due to growing interest in pulmonary drug delivery and their performance is the net result of a series of processes carried out during the formulation development and manufacturing process such as excipient selection, blending, milling, filling, and spray drying. To reach the small airways of the deep lung, the active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) particles need to have an aerodynamic diameter of 1-5 μm to avoid impaction and particle sedimentation in the upper respiratory tract, and due to this small particle size, the powder becomes highly cohesive resulting in poor flow. Therefore, API is usually blended with a coarse carrier to improve flowability, and due to its large size, it is more fluidizable than the micronized drug.

This study investigates the presence of active olive polyphenol oxidase (OePPO) in freshly extracted extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and its role in triggering enzymatic browning during EVOO storage. OePPO's presence in EVOO was validated through its distinct molecular weights observed in SDS-PAGE gels. The generation of quinones in EVOO was tracked spectrophotometrically over a storage period of one month, revealing browning reactions, particularly in the early days of storage, followed by a decline concurrent with water sedimentation.
