Objectives: To evaluate the effect of ethanolic neem leaf extract (ENLE) on cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis associated proteins during 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA)-induced hamster buccal pouch (HBP) carcinogenesis.

Design And Methods: Hamsters were divided into four groups. The right buccal pouches of animals in group 1 were painted with 0.5% DMBA three times a week. Animals in group 2 painted with DMBA as in group 1, received in addition, intragastric administration of ENLE (200 mg/kg bw) on days alternate to DMBA application. Group 3 animals were given ENLE (200 mg/kg bw) alone. Animals in group 4 served as control. All the animals were sacrificed after an experimental period of 14 weeks. The expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), cytokeratin, Bcl-2 and p53 in the buccal pouch tissues were investigated using immunohistochemical staining. In addition, the expression of p53 was confirmed by Western blot analysis.

Results: Topical application of DMBA for 14 weeks induced buccal pouch carcinomas associated with increased expression of PCNA, mutant p53 and Bcl-2 and decreased expression of cytokeratin. Administration of ENLE significantly inhibited the development of HBP carcinomas as revealed by decreased expression of PCNA, mutant p53 and Bcl-2 and overexpression of cytokeratin.

Conclusion: These findings suggest that ENLE exerts its anticancer properties by inhibiting cell proliferation and inducing differentiation and apoptosis.

Background: The mechanisms of inflammation and carcinogenesis are significantly influenced by nitric oxide (NO). Three different kinds of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) have been previously found: neuronal NOS, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and endothelial NOS.

Objectives: This study looked into the properties of iNOS in hamster buccal pouch carcinogenesis caused by 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA).

Oral and Pharyngeal Diverticula: A Rare Case of Dysphagia and Diagnostic Challenges.

Medicina (Kaunas)

Department of Health Communication Sciences, College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman University, P.O Box 84428, Riyadh 11671, Saudi Arabia.

Article Synopsis
  • - A 62-year-old man in Saudi Arabia developed rare diverticular pouches in his oral cavity, leading to symptoms like difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), weight loss, and a sensation of something stuck in the throat (globus sensation).
  • - Various diagnostic tests, such as ultrasound and CT scans, failed to detect the diverticula until specialized studies (like the videofluoroscopic swallow study and fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation) revealed multiple pouches.
  • - Despite recommendations for surgery by a healthcare team, the patient declined treatment, highlighting the need for improved diagnostic methods for dysphagia and more research on diverticular disease in the upper gastrointestinal tract.

Yohimbine is a potent bioactive indole alkaloid, isolated from a variety of biological sources and has long been used as a natural stimulant and aphrodisiac, particularly to treat erectile dysfunction. However, some literature also points toward its anticancer effect in different experimental models. The current study aimed to address a clinical concern on the therapeutic utilization of yohimbine as a repurposed drug.

Deficiency of peri-implant tissue contours is commonly seen due to the process of alveolar ridge resorption after tooth loss. Minor deficiencies can be effectively managed by soft-tissue augmentation procedures to create a more biomimetic tissue contour. The minimally invasive roll technique is a modification of the palatal roll-flap technique and can be carried out at both stages of implant surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assesses the effectiveness of PLGA-loaded Nedaplatin (PLGA-NDP) in treating oral cancer induced by DMBA in a hamster model, where DMBA exposure led to the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).
  • PLGA-NDP was administered both before and after carcinogen exposure, showing promising results in reducing tumor formation and altering key molecular proteins associated with cancer progression.
  • Findings revealed that PLGA-NDP inhibits Notch signaling, which is linked to apoptosis, suggesting that targeting this pathway could provide a new strategy for treating OSCC.
