In the year 2000, Migrant Health Services, Inc. began utilizing Diabetes Lay Educators (DLEs) as a way to improve the health status of Hispanic migrant farmworkers with diabetes. The purpose of this case study was to provide insight into the perceptions of one DLE and characteristics she needed to achieve positive client outcomes. These characteristics included a strong internal desire to help this population, a knowledge base, and advocacy skills needed to work between two cultures.

Syringaresinol, a phytochemical constituent belonging to lignan, is formed from two sinapyl alcohol units linked via a β-β linkage, which can be found in a wide variety of cereals and medicinal plants. Medical researches revealed that Syringaresinol possesses a broad spectrum of biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidation, anticancer, antibacterial, antiviral, neuroprotection, and vasodilation effects. These pharmacological properties lay the foundation for its use in treating various diseases such as inflammatory diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, diabetes and its complication, skin disorders, cancer, cardiovascular, and cerebrovascular diseases.

This study suggests a way to utilize the existing medical ontology and natural language processing techniques to extract major medical concepts from lay vocabularies of health consumers on social media and group them based on the defined semantic types in the ontology. Diabetes-related discussions on Tumblr was used to test the efficiency of SpaCy and the Markov-Viterbi algorithm to map lay medical terms to the defined medical concepts in the UMLS. The system discussed in this paper can better analyze free texts, take care of word ambiguity and extract the lifestyle indicators from the daily life discussions of diabetic people on Tumblr.
