Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventral intermediate nucleus of the thalamus for essential tremor is sometimes limited by side effects. The mechanisms by which DBS alleviates tremor or causes side effects are unclear; thus, it is difficult to select stimulus parameters that maximize the width of the therapeutic window. The goal of this study was to quantify the impact on side effect intensity (SE), tremor amplitude, and the therapeutic window of varying stimulus parameters. Tremor amplitude and SE were recorded at 40 to 90 combinations of pulse width, frequency, and voltage across 14 thalami. Posterior variable inclusion probabilities indicated that frequency and voltage were the most important predictors of both SE and tremor amplitude. The amount of tremor suppression achieved at frequencies of 90 to 100 Hz was not different from that at 160 to 170 Hz. However, the width of the therapeutic window decreased significantly and power consumption increased as frequency was increased above 90 to 100 Hz. Improved understanding of the relationships between stimulus parameters and clinical responses may lead to improved techniques of stimulus parameter adjustment.

Numerous challenges are posed by the extra-terrestrial environment for space farming and various technological growth systems are being developed to allow for microgreens' cultivation in space. Microgreens, with their unique nutrient profiles, may well integrate the diet of crew members, being a natural substitute for chemical food supplements. However, the space radiation environment may alter plant properties, and there is still a knowledge gap concerning the effects of various types of radiation on plants and specifically on the application of efficient and rapid methods for selecting new species for space farming, based on their radio-resistance.

Although hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is used to treat systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), it is associated with retinal toxicity. Early diagnosis can prevent the further progression of HCQ-associated retinopathy by discontinuing HCQ treatments. This study aimed to evaluate the early diagnostic parameters in patients with SLE treated with HCQ and identify the best approach using multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) and swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) to reflect subclinical retinal toxicity.

Acupuncturing the ST36 acupoint can evoke a responding activity in the spinal dorsal root ganglia and generate spikes. In order to identify the responding mechanism of different acupuncture manipulations, in this paper the spike history of neurons is taken as the starting point and the coupling generalized linear model is adopted to encode the neuronal spiking activity evoked by different acupuncture manipulations. Then, maximum likelihood estimation is used to fit the model parameters and estimate the coupling parameters of stimulus, the self-coupling parameters of the neuron's own spike history and the cross-coupling parameters of other neurons' spike history.

Primary blast exposure is a predominant cause of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) among veterans and active-duty military personnel, and affected individuals may develop long-lasting behavioral disturbances that interfere with quality of life. Our prior research with the "Missouri Blast" model demonstrated behavioral changes relevant to deficits in cognitive and affective domains after exposure to low-intensity blast (LIB). In this study, behavioral evaluations were extended to 3 months post-LIB injury using multifaceted conventional and advanced behavioral paradigms.

The study aimed to evaluate the analgesic efficacy of tapentadol in horses, by determining plasma serotonin concentration and adrenocortical response, as biomarkers of pain stress in chronic joint disorders. Thirty-six horses (20 females and 16 males) were divided into three groups of 12 subjects each: group A, osteoarthritis (OA), grade 3-4 lameness; group B, OA, grade 5 lameness; and group C, no OA, no lameness, were enrolled. The orthopedic examination included flexion tests, and radiological and ultrasound examinations.
