Published: January 2007

Background: Cocaine dependence is a public health problem affecting 2 million individuals in USA. Craving is a predictor of subsequent cocaine use and is related to changes in brain activity in networks involving the prefrontal cortex.

Methods: We investigated the efficacy of one session of high frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to reduce craving in cocaine addicted subjects. Six patients underwent two sessions of 10Hz rTMS over left or right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Before, immediately after and 4h after rTMS we measured craving using visual analogue scales.

Results: Right, but not left, DLPFC stimulation significantly reduced craving over time (F(2,10)=11.07, p=0.0029). The reduction was 19% (13.4-24.6%) from baseline and disappeared after 4h. The interaction of time by site of stimulation for craving was also significant (F(2,25)=6.13, p=0.0068).

Conclusion: One session of 10Hz rTMS over right, but not left, DLPFC transiently reduces craving in cocaine dependent individuals. These results highlight the potential of non-invasive neuromodulation as a therapeutic tool for cocaine addiction.

Background: To address the growing demand for psychological treatment, healthcare providers are increasingly utilising low-intensity interventions, characterised by reduced practitioner contact and emphasis on independent patient engagement with therapeutic materials through between-session work (BSW). While BSW is critical for maximising treatment outcomes, patients and practitioners report challenges with its completion. Research identifying factors influencing between-session engagement in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has largely focused on high-intensity CBT, limiting understanding within low-intensity contexts.

Background/problems: Individuals with comorbid physical and mental health conditions face significant threats to their well-being while placing a substantial burden on healthcare systems through increased service costs. Nursing professionals encounter multiple challenges in delivering effective care to this population. These challenges include a lack of integrated care models, communication barriers among providers, the complexity of addressing dual health needs, insufficient training in comorbidity management, resource and time constraints, and pervasive stigma toward mental illness.

Vancomycin Dosing in Patients on Intermittent Hemodialysis-A Retrospective Study.

Clin Ther

January 2025

Pharmacy Department, Alice Springs Hospital, Alice Springs, Australia; Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute, College of Medicine and Public Health, Flinders University, Alice Springs, NT, Australia.

Purpose: To determine the incidence of therapeutic target attainment using a three-times per week protocol for vancomycin therapy given during the last hour of intermittent hemodialysis (HD).

Methods: A single-center retrospective cohort study was conducted of patient medical records in a remote dialysis center from January 2017 to July 2023. Adult patients with chronic kidney disease stage 5 on ≥3 months of intermittent HD who had received a course of vancomycin therapy with ≥1 serum vancomycin concentration recorded were included.

Purpose: This implementation study investigates the feasibility of a nurse-led pedometer intervention and motivational counselling for physically inactive people with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy in a real-world oncology outpatient setting. It also evaluates the effectiveness of supportive conversations with specialized nurses in terms of behavior change.

Methods: Nurses were trained through an 8-h educational program to deliver the intervention.
