Although supramolecular chemistry and noncovalent interactions are playing an increasingly important role in modern chemical research, a detailed understanding of prototype noncovalent interactions remains lacking. In particular, pi-pi interactions, which are ubiquitous in biological systems, are not fully understood in terms of their strength, geometrical dependence, substituent effects, or fundamental physical nature. However, state-of-the-art quantum chemical methods are beginning to provide answers to these questions. Coupled-cluster theory through perturbative triple excitations in conjunction with large basis sets and extrapolations to the complete basis set limit have provided definitive results for the binding energy of several configurations of the benzene dimer, and benchmark-quality ab initio potential curves are being used to calibrate new density functional and force-field models for pi-pi interactions. Studies of substituted benzene dimers indicate flaws in the conventional wisdom about substituent effects in pi-pi interactions. Three-body and four-body interactions in benzene clusters have also been examined.

Controlled Self-assembly of Nanographdiynes Mediated by Molecular Dipoles Induced by Rotatory Asymmetric Substituents.

The discrete π- stacks of specific lengths and orientation is crucial for understanding the impact of intermolecular interactions on optical or electronic properties of nanographdiynes. We designed and synthesized nanographdiynes modified with bulky rotatable asymmetric substituents. The peripheral substituents with different push-pull electronic properties can induce molecular dipoles perpendicular to nanoGDY π surface with different orientation.

From X- To J-Aggregation: Subtly Managing Intermolecular Interactions for Superior Phototheranostics with Precise 1064 nm Excitation.

The stacking mode in aggregate state results from a delicate balance of supramolecular interactions, which closely affects the optoelectronic properties of organic π-conjugated systems. Then, managing these interactions is crucial for advancing phototheranostics, yet remains challenging. A subtle strategy involving peripheral phenyl groups is debuted herein to transform X-aggregated SQ-H into J-aggregated SQ-Ph, reorienting intermolecular dipole interactions while rationally modulating π-π interactions.

We present a DFT-PCM NMR study of 3-indoleacetic acid (3-IAA), used as a working example, including explicit solvent molecules, named PCM-nCHCl, PCM-nDMSO (n = 0, 2, 4, 8, 14, 20, and 25), to investigate the dimer formation in solution. Apart from well-known cyclic (I) and open (II) acetic acid (AA) dimers, two new structures were located on DFT-PCM potential energy surface (PES) for 3-IAA named quasicyclic A (III) and quasicyclic B (IV), the last one having N-H…O hydrogen bond (instead of O-H…O). In addition, four other structures having π-π type interactions named V, VI, VII, and VIII were also obtained completing the sample on the PES.

Monitoring of p-nitrophenol (PNP) and 3-methyl-4-nitrophenol (PNMC) in human urine and environmental water is of great importance for human health assessment and environmental protection, as they are both urinary metabolites of some poisonous pesticides and priority environmental pollutants. However, efficient extraction of trace levels of PNP and PNMC from complex matrices remains challenging. This study presented the synthesis of histidine-modified ZIF-90 on natural eggshell membrane (ESM@His-ZIF-90) via a facile one-step in-situ growth strategy, and its application as an adsorbent for dispersive membrane extraction (DME) of PNP and PNMC in human urine and environmental water.

2-Ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP) is a replacement flame-retardant commonly found in several environmental matrices and human biospecimens. Although some adverse effects of EHDPP have been identified, the endocrine-disrupting effects of EHDPP and its key metabolites on the human estrogen receptor (ER) are largely unknown. Herein, we report for the first time that EHDPP, at concentrations found in the environment and humans, significantly promoted estrogenic activity and synergized with 17β-estradiol-induced ER transactivation.
