Objective: To assess the frequency of some epidemiological variables in 200 patients over 65 years old that came to admission as outpatients in the psychogeriatric area in the psychiatric unit at the Hospital Italiano in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Method: A specific questionnaire was completed by both patient (or relative) and the physician.

Results: 83% were female and 17% male. The most important diagnosis were depressive disorder (34%), adaptive upheavals (28%) and dementia (16%), within this group, major depressive disorder and Alzheimer dementia. Only a 31% patients went under a neuropsychological assessment psychotherapy was indicated to 18% of the patients, pharmacology for 39%, memory improvement group for 18% and combined treatment for 25%.

Conclusion: This paper brings data regarding outpatients over 65 years old with psychogeriatric treatment. This may improve the health system in psychogeriatric area taking into account socio-cultural and economic factors.

Basal forebrain global functional connectivity is preserved in asymptomatic presenilin-1 E280A mutation carriers: Results from the Colombia cohort.

J Prev Alzheimers Dis

February 2025

Department of Psychosomatic Medicine, University Medicine Rostock, Rostock, Germany; Deutsches Zentrum für Neurodegenerative Erkrankungen (DZNE), Greifswald, Rostock, Germany.

Background: Imaging studies showed early atrophy of the cholinergic basal forebrain in prodromal sporadic Alzheimer's disease and reduced posterior basal forebrain functional connectivity in amyloid positive individuals with subjective cognitive decline. Similar investigations in familial cases of Alzheimer's disease are still lacking.

Objectives: To test whether presenilin-1 E280A mutation carriers have reduced basal forebrain functional connectivity and whether this is linked to amyloid pathology.

Background: Cognitive training (CT) has been one of the important non-pharmaceutical interventions that could delay cognitive decline. Currently, no definite CT methods are available. Furthermore, little attention has been paid to the effect of CT on mood and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL).

A Scoping Review of the Current Knowledge of the Social Determinants of Health and Infectious Diseases (Specifically COVID-19, Tuberculosis, and H1N1 Influenza) in Canadian Arctic Indigenous Communities.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

Indigenous and Global Health Research Group, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, College of Health Sciences, University of Alberta, 1-126 8602 112 Street, Edmonton, AB T6G 2E1, Canada.

Social determinants of health (SDHs) and the impact of colonization can make Canadian Arctic Indigenous communities susceptible to infectious diseases, including the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This scoping review followed the PRISMA guidelines for scoping reviews and studied what is known about selected pandemics (COVID-19, tuberculosis, and H1N1 influenza) and SDHs (healthcare accessibility, food insecurity, mental health, cultural continuity, housing, community infrastructure, and socioeconomic status (SES)) for Canadian Arctic Indigenous communities. Original studies published in English and French up to October 2024 were located in databases (PubMed, Medline, and CINAHL), , and through reference tracking.

Purpose: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has shown feasibility in evaluating cognitive function and brain functional connectivity (FC). Therefore, this fNIRS study aimed to develop a screening method for subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) based on resting-state prefrontal FC and neuropsychological tests via machine learning.

Methods: Functional connectivity data measured by fNIRS were collected from 55 normal controls (NCs), 80 SCD individuals, and 111 MCI individuals.
