Patterned self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiolates (AT) on Au and Ag substrates were imaged and characterized by scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM). The patterns were prepared in situ by direct writing with the zone-plate-focused X-ray beam provided by the SPEM station. Whereas both AT/Au and AT/Ag behaved alike upon the irradiation, which resulted in similar contrasts in the fabricated patterns and similar microspot spectra from the irradiated areas, the intensity relationship between the patterned and nonpatterned areas changed by different pathways for the Au and Ag substrates after the exposure of the patterns to ambient. The SPEM data imply that weakly bound molecular fragments are desorbed from the irradiated areas upon air exposure in the case of Ag, whereas adsorption of airborne molecules from ambient occurs for the Au substrate. The origin of the observed differences is presumably related to the specific branching patterns of irradiation-induced modification of AT/Au and AT/Ag.

Iron-sulfur proteins perform a wide variety of reactions central to the metabolisms of all living organisms. Foundational to their reaction chemistry are the rich electronic structures of their constituent Fe-S clusters, which differ in important ways from the active sites of mononuclear Fe enzymes. In this perspective, we summarize the essential electronic structure features that make Fe-S clusters unique, and point to the need for studies aimed at understanding the electronic basis for their reactivity under physiological conditions.

Photoluminescence (PL) quenching mechanism and dynamics of carbon nanodots (CNDs) with molecular electron donor and acceptor is investigated by means of time resolved emission spectroscopy. CNDs are prepared by direct pyrolysis from two different precursors, di-ammonium citrate and tri-ammonium citrate, and at two different temperatures 150 °C and 180 °C and 40 hours under ambient conditions. Despite the small changes in the pyrolysis temperature rather significant differences are observed in the structure, PL quantum yield, and hence observation of the important characteristics of PL quenching kinetics in the presence of benzophenone and dimethoxybenzene as an electron acceptor and donors, respectively.

Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging allows for the assessment of connectivity patterns in brain functional networks, which have been associated with mental-health disorders.
