Two experiments are reported that used the selective interference paradigm to study whether, besides response selection, the process of memory updating is involved in simple mental arithmetic. Participants were asked to solve simple sums (e.g., 2 + 6, Experiment 1) or simple products (e.g., 3 X 8, Experiment 2) in a single-task control condition and in three dual-task conditions with a selective interference task, simple reactions, choice reactions, or delayed choice reactions. The role of memory updating was estimated on the basis of the difference in impairment due to the choice reaction time and the delayed choice reaction time task, whereas the difference in impairment between the simple reaction time and the choice reaction time task indicates the role of response selection. While replicating previous results concerning response selection (Deschuyteneer & Vandierendonck, 2005, in press), the study showed that memory updating is strongly involved in solving simple mental arithmetic sums and products.

Background: The increased apoptosis of bile duct epithelial cells (BECs) due to some damage factors is considered the initiating factor in the occurrence and progression of biliary atresia (BA). Vitamin D receptor (VDR) is thought to play a crucial role in maintaining the intrinsic immune balance and integrity of bile duct epithelial cells (BECs). To investigate the role of VDRs in the pathogenesis and progression of BA using in vitro and in vivo models.

Background: The identification of circulating potential biomarkers may help earlier diagnosis of breast cancer, which is critical for effective treatment and better disease outcomes. We aimed to study the role of circ-FAF1 as a diagnostic biomarker in female breast cancer using peripheral blood samples of these patients, and to investigate the relation between circ-FAF1 and different clinicopathological features of the included patients.
Methods And Results: This case-control study enrolled 60 female breast cancer patients and 60 age-matched healthy control subjects.

The utility of urinary tests for the monitoring of the treatment efficacy and adverse events of anticancer therapies is constrained by the low concentration of relevant urinary biomarkers. Here we report, using mice with lung cancer and treated with chemotherapy, of a urinary fluorescence test for the concurrent monitoring of the levels of a tumour biomarker (cathepsin B) and of a biomarker of chemotherapy-induced kidney injury (N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase). The test involves two intratracheally administered urinary reporters leveraging caged bioorthogonal click handles for the biomarker-dependent activation of 'clickability' and renal clearance, and the bioorthogonal click reaction of each renally cleared reporter with paired fluorescence indicators in the collected urine.

The incidence of cervical cancer continues to rise in underdeveloped regions due to low human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination rates and inadequate screening systems. To achieve convenient, rapid, and accurate detection of HPV, we developed a three-wire lateral flow strip assay system based on dual-OR logic gates for rapid and simultaneous detection of HPV subtypes 16 and 18 in a single test. The system combines three-branch-catalytic hairpin assembly (TCHA)-mediated signal amplification with simple OR logic gate-based signal output to improve detection rates while enabling HPV 16/18 subtype identification.

For paediatric patients suffering from neurofibromatosis, Selumetinib (SEL) is the only approved drug. Here an original ecofriendly and high pace method is introduced using 96- microwell spectrophotometric assay (MW-SPA) to measure SEL content in bulk and commercial pharmaceutical formulation (Koselugo capsules). This assay was relied on in-microwell formation of a coloured charge transfer complex (CTC) upon interaction of SEL with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ).
