Herein we report attempts to optimize the pharmacological properties of 5-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-N-acetyltryptamine (5-HEAT), a melatonin receptor ligand previously described by us. Several 5-substituted and 2,5-disubstituted N-acyltryptamines were synthesized and evaluated in vitro for the human cloned MT(1) and MT(2) receptors. From this series of N-acyltryptamines the 2-bromo derivative (5 c) retains the interesting efficacy profile of 5-HEAT and shows increased melatonin receptor affinities; it represents one of the first examples of a high-affinity MT(1) agonist/MT(2) antagonist. Some other full agonists for both melatonin receptors which exhibit similar or increased affinity relative to that of melatonin were obtained.

Background: Acupuncture is an effective treatment for knee osteoarthritis (KOA), reducing pain and improving function. While melatonin (MLT) has notable pain relief benefits, the analgesic mechanism of acupuncture in KOA and its relationship with melatonin are still unknown. This study aims to explore this mechanism.

(), a significant ornamental plant species, is adversely affected by the severe soil heavy metal pollution resulting from rapid industrialization, particularly in terms of its growth environment. Cadmium (Cd), a representative heavy metal pollutant, poses a significant threat to plant growth and photosynthetic physiology. Despite the importance of understanding Cd stress resistance in rhododendrons, research in this area is limited.

Camels () are seasonal short-day breeders, regulated by photoperiod and melatonin secretion. However, no studies have explored melatonin levels in camel seminal plasma or their relationship with testosterone, age, or climatic factors, nor is it known whether melatonin receptors exist in camel spermatozoa to respond to seminal melatonin. This study aimed to analyze melatonin levels in camel seminal plasma and its specific receptors in spermatozoa.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a significant neuropsychiatric condition characterized by marked psychological mood disturbances. Despite extensive research on the symptomatology of BD, the mechanisms underlying its development and presentation remain unknown. Consequently, potential treatments are limited, and existing medications often cause significant side effects, leading to treatment discontinuation.
