We investigated a nodulin 26-like protein NIP2;1, which belongs to the third subgroup of Arabidopsis aquaporins. Histochemical analysis of a promoter-beta-glucuronidase fusion revealed the root-specific expression of NIP2;1. The NIP2;1 protein was detected in young roots, but not in leaves, stems, flowers or siliques. The transient expression of NIP2;1 linked with green fluorescent protein in Arabidopsis cultured cells showed its putative endoplasmic reticulum (ER) localization. NIP2;1 expressed in yeast cells had low water channel activity in the membranes. NIP2;1 may function as a water channel and/or ER channel for other small molecules or ions.

Nitrogen fixation in legume nodules is crucial for plant growth and development. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effects of nitric oxide [S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO)] and silicon [sodium metasilicate (Si)], both individually and in combination, on soybean growth, nodule formation, leghaemoglobin (Lb) synthesis, and potential post-translational modifications. At the V1 stage, soybean plants were treated for 2 weeks with 150 µM GSNO, and Si at concentrations of 1 mM, 2 mM, and 4 mM.

A typical centrosome consists of a pair of centrioles embedded in a proteinous matrix called pericentriolar material. However, the centrosomes in the mouse oocytes and early embryos lack centrioles, but consist of the γ-tubulin-enriched vesicle aggregates. We previously revealed that Nek2 and centrobin/Nip2, a centrosomal substrate of Nek2, is critical for the mouse early embryogenesis, especially at the step of spindle assembly during mitosis.

It has been demonstrated that exposure to cocaine increases cell death in the fetal CNS. To examine the molecular mechanisms of this effect, we employed mouse oligo microarrays followed by real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (real-time RT-PCR) to compare expressions of apoptosis-related genes in the cerebral wall of 18-day-old (E18) fetuses from cocaine-treated (20 mg/kg cocaine, s.c.

The development of high throughput genomic and bioinformatic analysis tools, coupled with established molecular techniques, has allowed new insights into the pathogenesis of infectious diseases. In humans, coxasackievirus B3 (CVB3) is the primary etiological agent of viral myocarditis, an inflammatory disease process involving the heart muscle. Early host cellular survival and apoptotic mechanisms during viral infections, as well as immune events, affect myocarditis progression and outcome.
