Improving the way we die: a coorientation study assessing agreement/disagreement in the organization-public relationship of hospices and physicians. | LitMetric
The movement to reform dying in America promotes hospice as a model for change. Yet terminally ill patients increasingly are closer to death when they enter some 3,300 hospices. Hospice leaders blame physicians for delaying referrals and charge that delays cause hardships for their organizations and patients. Based on symmetrical theory and the coorientation model, a survey of one Southern hospice and its referring physicians was conducted to measure agreement, perceived agreement, and accuracy between the two sides on the issue of timely referral. Results showed that hospice leaders inaccurately perceive a high degree of disagreement when they and physicians generally agree on the issue.

Background : With burnout rates highly prevalent in palliative care nurses, it is important to have a holistic understanding of the causes of burnout and strategies both to prevent burnout and to cope with burnout.Aim : To understand the causes of burnout and strategies used to prevent and cope with burnout in palliative care nurses. This would allow the implementation of strategies on a personal level and organisational level to mitigate the effects of burnout.
Background : Minority ethnic patients are less likely to access timely and effective palliative and end-of-life care and, as a consequence, more likely to experience poorer symptom management and receive more intensive treatments at the end of life. Research activity has the potential to address the aforementioned barriers to improve access. However, there is a need to develop capacity and capability, particularly within underserved communities, to provide an infrastructure that can drive research activity informed by the community to benefit the community.
Objectives : To explore whether training on the SICG-Peds© (Serious Illness Guide for Pediatrics) impacts a pediatric clinician's confidence and knowledge in participating and initiating/leading difficult conversations with families of children living with a serious illness.Methods : Over 2 years, clinicians from BC and Ontario who care for children with serious illnesses attended training workshops on the SICG-Peds©. These workshops were evaluated using pre- and post-workshop questionnaires.
