Triethanolamine (TEA) is converted into acetate and ammonia by a strictly anaerobic, gram-positive Acetobacterium strain LuTria3. Fermentation experiments with resting cell suspensions and specifically deuterated substrates indicate that in the acetate molecule the carboxylate and the methyl groups correspond to the alcoholic function and to its adjacent methylene group, respectively, of the 2-hydroxyethyl unit of TEA. A 1,2 shift of a hydrogen (deuterium) atom from -CH2-O- to =N-CH2- without exchange with the medium was observed. This fact gives evidence that a radical mechanism occurs involving the enzyme and/or coenzyme molecule as a hydrogen carrier. Such a biodegradation appears analogous to the conversion of 2-phenoxyethanol into acetate mediated by another strain of the anaerobic homoacetogenic bacterium Acetobacterium.

This study investigates the enhancement of methane production in anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) through the introduction of exogenous CO₂ and the application of bamboo biochar. Exogenous CO₂ boosts biogas yield by providing an additional carbon source, which requires optimized solubility and pH buffering to ensure effective methanation. Biochar serves as an electron shuttle and pH stabilizer, facilitating CO solubility and syntrophic interactions that enhance microbial stability.

High ammonia stress, which inhibited the performance and stability of anaerobic digestion (AD) systems, is considered a bottleneck problem. To improve the performance of ambient acidogenic AD system under high ammonia stress, three different strategies were developed, including native sludge with nano zero valent iron (nZVI) addition (S), domesticated sludge enriched with homoacetogens with no additive (S) and domesticated sludge with nZVI addition (S). All groups were operated at ambient temperature (24 ± 1 °C).

Heterotrophic microorganisms are frequently observed in hydrogenotrophic denitrification systems and are presumed to contribute to their improved performance. However, their roles and metabolic pathways in the hydrogen-based membrane biofilm reactor (HMBfR) system remain unclear. The objective of this study was to elucidate the underlying mechanisms driving heterotrophic denitrification.

This study presents a bidirectional flow tidal bioreactor designed to enhance H-driven CO biomethanation. The bioreactor alternated biofilms between immersion in nutrient solution and exposure to H/CO, creating alternating dry and wet states. This tidal operation minimized liquid film thickness during dry periods and ensured uniform nutrient distribution during wet periods.

Unlabelled: We examined the microbial populations present in fecal samples of macropods capable of utilizing a mixture of hydrogen and carbon dioxide (70:30) percent. The feces samples were cultured under anaerobic conditions, and production of methane or acetic acids characteristic for methanogenesis and homoacetogenesis was measured. While the feces of adult macropods mainly produced methane from the substrate, the sample from a 2-month-old juvenile kangaroo only produced acetic acid and no methane.
