This paper presents a general coarse-grained molecular mechanics model based on electric point multipole expansion and Gay-Berne [J. Chem. Phys. 74, 3316 (1981)] potential. Coarse graining of van der Waals potential is achieved by treating molecules as soft uniaxial ellipsoids interacting via a generalized anisotropic Gay-Berne function. The charge distribution is represented by point multipole expansion, including point charge, dipole, and quadrupole moments placed at the center of mass. The Gay-Berne and point multipole potentials are combined in the local reference frame defined by the inertial frame of the all-atom counterpart. The coarse-grained model has been applied to rigid-body molecular dynamics simulations of molecular liquids including benzene and methanol. The computational efficiency is improved by several orders of magnitude, while the results are in reasonable agreement with all-atom models and experimental data. We also discuss the implications of using point multipole for polar molecules capable of hydrogen bonding and the applicability of this model to a broad range of molecular systems including highly charged biopolymers.

We solve acoustic scattering problems by means of the isogeometric boundary integral equation method. In order to avoid spurious modes, we apply the combined field integral equations for either sound-hard scatterers or sound-soft scatterers. These integral equations are discretized by Galerkin's method, which especially enables the mathematically correct regularization of the hypersingular integral operator.

The effect of second coordination sphere interactions on the magnetic anisotropy of transition metals.

Dalton Trans

December 2024

Center for Integrated Materials Research, Department of Chemistry and iNANO, Aarhus University, Langelandsgade 140, DK-8000 Aarhus C, Denmark.

In the study of mononuclear transition metal single molecule magnets (SMMs), extensive research has concentrated on identifying optimal coordination geometries around the central metal ion to enhance SMM properties. However, the role of non-covalent interactions in the second coordination sphere has been relatively underexplored. Here, we study the impact of non-covalent Cl⋯H interactions on the magnetic anisotropy of the central Co(II) ion in the distorted axially compressed octahedral complex CoCl(tu) (1) (tu = SC(NH)).

The optomechanical motion of a gold nanoparticle (GNP) dimer-a pair of optically bound GNPs-in fluid, manipulated by a Bessel beam, is theoretically studied using the multiple multipole (MMP) method. Since a Bessel beam possesses orbital angular momentum (OAM) and spin angular momentum (SAM) simultaneously, complicated rigid-body motions of the dimer can be induced. The mechanism involves the equilibrium between the optical force with the reactive drag force exerted by the fluid.

Chalcophosphate metasurfaces with multipolar resonances and electro-optic tuning.

RSC Adv

Air Force Research Laboratory, Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, Wright-Patterson AFB Ohio 45433 USA.

We computationally analyze the electro-optic response of metasurfaces consisting of interconnected nanoantennas with multipolar resonances using a chalcophosphate, SnPS, as the active material. SnPS has large electro-optic coefficients and relatively low Curie temperature (<70 °C), allowing for strong changes in the refractive index of the material under moderate electric fields if the temperature can be finely controlled in proximity of the Curie point. Through numerical simulations, we show that metasurfaces designed with this nanostructured material demonstrate a significant shift of multipolar resonances upon biasing, despite moderate refractive-index values of the chalcophosphate and reduced mode localization due to this.

We herein report the synthesis, characterizations, and synchrotron X-ray charge-density studies of oxo-centered triruthenium(II,III,III) clusters [RuO(CHClCOO)(py)] () and [RuO(CHClCOO)(CO)(py)] () (py = pyridine). Dichloroacetate was chosen for its large scattering factor of the Cl atom, and its electron-withdrawing nature results in significant stabilization of the targeted lower-valent Ru state in the cluster framework. Multipole analysis revealed that the difference in electron populations between two crystallographically independent Ru centers is small for (Δ = 0.
