In this article we review allergic reactions to stinging insects (hymenoptera) and biting insects (mosquitoes). We describe the first proven case of sensitization and anaphylaxis to hymenoptera in an Icelander. Yellow jackets, honeybees, paper wasps and hornets cause most sting reactions. The vespidae species were first seen in Iceland in 1973. Since that time, these insects have inhabited the island in ever increasing numbers. Symptoms range from local reactions to systemic anaphylaxis and even death. Accurate diagnosis is important as treatment with venom immunotherapy can prevent repeated reactions by at least 95%. Local reactions in children and adults and even widespread urticaria in children should not be treated with immunotherapy. Practical measures to avoid these insects and the characteristics of each species are discussed. Physicians and other health care workers must recognize the symptoms of insect sting allergy and know when to refer to an allergist for skin testing and possible immunotherapy.

Backbone resonance assignments of PhoCl, a photocleavable protein.

Biomol NMR Assign

PhoCl is a photocleavable protein engineered from a green-to-red photoconvertible fluorescent protein by circular permutation, and has been used in various optogenetic applications including precise control of protein localization and activity in cells. Upon violet light illumination, PhoCl undergoes a β-elimination reaction to be cleaved at the chromophore, resulting in spontaneous dissociation into a large empty barrel and a small C-terminal peptide. However, the structural determinants and the mechanism of the PhoCl photocleavage remain elusive, hindering the further development of more robust photocleavable optogenetic tools.

Objective: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune condition that causes severe joint deformities and impaired functionality, affecting the well-being and daily life of individuals. Consequently, there is a pressing demand for identifying viable therapeutic targets for treating RA. This study aimed to explore the molecular mechanisms of osteoclast differentiation in PBMC from patients with RA through transcriptome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis.

Snails belonging to the genus Biomphalaria serve as obligatory intermediate hosts for the trematode Schistosoma mansoni, the causative agent for the most widespread form of schistosomiasis. The simpler nervous systems of gastropod molluscs, such as Biomphalaria, provide advantageous models for investigating neural responses to infection at the cellular and network levels. The present study examined neuropeptides related to cholecystokinin (CCK), a major multifunctional regulator of central nervous system (CNS) function in mammals.

Epcoritamab, a bispecific T-cell engager (BiTE) antibody targeting CD3 and CD20, has shown significant efficacy in treating refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). However, its use can lead to severe side effects, such as tumor flare. Here, we report the case of an 84-year-old male with relapsed DLBCL who developed fatal unilateral pleural effusion following Epcoritamab treatment.

Enhancing Catalytic Removal of Autoexhaust Soot Particles via the Modulation of Interfacial Oxygen Vacancies in Cu/CeO Catalysts.

Environ Sci Technol

State Key Laboratory of Heavy Oil Processing, Key Laboratory of Optical Detection Technology for Oil and Gas, College of Science, China University of Petroleum, Beijing 102249, PR China.

The purification efficiency of autoexhaust carbon strongly depends on the heterogeneous interface structure between active metal and oxide, which can modulate the local electronic structure of defect sites to promote the activation of reactant molecules. Herein, the high-dispersion CuO clusters supported on the well-defined CeO nanorods were prepared using the complex deposition slow method. The formation of heteroatomic Cu-O-Ce interfacial structural units as active sites can capture electrons to achieve activation of the NO and O molecules.
