This paper (1) describes the enzymatic synthesis of a mixture of adenosine, guanosine, cytidine, and uridine triphosphates (ATP, GTP, CTP, and UTP) from ribonucleic acid (RNA). RNA was hydrolyzed by nuclease P1 to a mixture of 5'-nucleoside monophosphates. This mixture was converted to the nucleoside triphosphates using a mixture of nucleoside monophosphate kinases and acetate kinase, with acetyl phosphate as the ultimate phosphoryl donor. The nucleoside monophosphokinases were extracted from brewer's yeast in a four-step procedure. The specific activity of the yeast enzyme preparation after gel permeation chromatography was sufficiently high that the yeast kinases could be immobilized in volumes that were practical for laboratory scale syntheses. Conversions from NMP to NTP in a mixture containing 0.34 mol of total nucleoside phosphates were: ATP, 90%; GTP, 90%; CTP, 60%; and UTP, 40%.

In this article, a neoacetalization-based method for post-SELEX modification of aptamers is introduced. Three modified quinine binding aptamer scaffolds were synthesized by replacing three different nucleosides of the binding site with a (2,3)-4-(methoxyamino)butane-1,2,3-triol residue. These aptamer scaffolds were incubated in different aldehyde mixtures with and without quinine, allowing the reversible formation of -methoxy-1,3-oxazinane (MOANA) nucleoside analogues through dynamic combinatorial chemistry.

Coral reef sponges efficiently take up particulate and dissolved organic matter (DOM) from the water column and release compounds such as nucleosides, amino acids, and other dissolved metabolites to the surrounding reef via their exhalent seawater, but the influence of this process on reef picoplankton and nutrient processing is relatively unexplored. Here we examined the impact of sponge exhalent on the reef picoplankon community and subsequent alterations to the reef dissolved metabolite pool. We exposed reef picoplankton communities to a sponge exhalent water mixture (Niphates digitalis and Xestospongia muta) or filtered reef seawater (control) in closed, container-based dark incubations.

Barnyard grasses (Echinochloa spp.) are the most troublesome weeds in rice ecosystems of Jiangsu Province, China, and long-term use of herbicides inevitably cause the development of resistance. In this study, 122 field-sampled populations were tested for resistance to penoxsulam (PEN), metamifop (MET), florpyrauxifen-benzyl, (FPB), propanil, and tripyrasulfone.

We have previously shown that 2-thiouridine (S2U), either as a single nucleoside or as an element of RNA chain, is effectively desulfurized under applied in vitro oxidative conditions. The chemically induced desulfuration of S2U resulted in two products: 4-pyrimidinone nucleoside (H2U) and uridine (U). Recently, we investigated whether the desulfuration of S2U is a natural process that also occurs in the cells exposed to oxidative stress or whether it only occurs in the test tube during chemical reactions with oxidants at high concentrations.
